She was 9. I'm sure you never did anything incredibly stupid at that age. Oh wait...

there is a difference between doing something stupid and what she did.

when you were 9, did you ever try to outrun a car and cross the street when a car was traveling at 70mph?

i did stupid things when i was 9 but nothing that stupid

I just think it's amazing that you all can remember exactly what you did at age 9! I used to do all kinds of retarded things that would cause me to cringe if I saw some kid doing it now. Then again I have no idea if I was 5, 8, 9 ,12, etc.

lmao 😀

Of course what you guys did wasn't as stupid. You are still alive. If you had died doing whatever stupidity you did then you would be considered an idiot by ATOT standards.

No my mommy taught me to look both ways before crossing the street. And not to talk to strangers.

I hate to say this, but, any child who tries to run in front of a train travelling at 70+ MPH can not be described as smart. Well loved, nice, outgoing...maaaybe. Smart? Doesn't seem like it.

That said, condolences to the family.

(Yes, yes, I know, I'm a monster and you're going to flame me)

Most younger children don't know the consequences of many of their actions. That's why lots of little children dart out into the street after their toys or balls and whatnot. Her judgement may have been off as she thought she could make it across the tracks, not realizing the train was moving insanely fast.

Let me guess....you are a liberal? Must be. Did you not read tha part about the crossing arms being DOWN and the train blowing it's whistle? Why should tax dollars be used to prevent a few dumbasses from walking in front of a moving train....SOMETHING EVERYONE IS TAUGHT ABOUT WHEN A KID. This accident is tragic but it is the little girl's own fault. I realize that does not make it any better but it sure doesn't justify wasting tax dollars because people do not exercise due care. Kids are shown movies in Elementary school to teach them the dangers of train tracks and train crossings and these crossings have been around for 150+ years without overpasses.....why are people today so stupid that the world has to be built to dumbass-proof standards?

Clearly, your methods of teaching this 9-year old didn't work. How much is that kids life worth? A simple pedestrian overpass would not cost that much and we'd still have one more precious child. By the way, usually the railroad company is willing to voluntarilly put up a substantial portion of any cost to reduce accidents (insurance costs fall for them as well as less downtime). This could be a win-win situation for the town and the railroad.

How much money do you think this country has if it has to go out of its way to protect every citizen and illegal alien of their own stupidity. 1 bridge for this person, 1 bridge for another kid, more padded guide rails for another, where is it supposed to stop?

Realistically, in economic terms, a child is not 'worth' that much. It's horrible, but it's true. As people are born, they are worth relatively little, their only value being derived from their potential, then, as we invest in their education, their value increases, until they begin to increase their own value (experience). Finally, as their potential to continue to benefit themselves and others increases (age), their value once again drops.

I may be going to hell, but you can put a dollar figure on life.

The kids are running between moving train cars? 😕
no. see my edit. those trains are going 70 MPH + when they blow through town, unless they are on the side track waiting for another train to pass.
OK, I'm still a little confused. Did she try to beat the train at the crossing and tripped or something?
from what i heard from the people who saw it she was on her bike and saw the train coming. the crossing arms were down and the lights and bells were going. she got off her bike and tried to run across the track before the train got there. well like i said the trains travel at 70mph+ and she tried to run infront of the engine before the road was blocked as it passed.

Only a close-minded, sister-f***ing, redneck conservative would bring politics into this conversation. Go spit your political bull-s*it somewhere else.

Condolensces to the family.

And, yet, you managed to be the bigger d!ck. Good job.

I'd post the lyrics to Locomotive Breath but I don't have the heart..

poor girl, she shouldn't have pressed her luck :\

Very sad. We have a lot of complaints about the railroad crossings here as well. The only reason this town exists is because the railroad had a junction here. The trains have been a part of the life here since the 1850's. I don't feel the least bit of sympathy for adults that die doing stupid stuff like this as they have had 155 years to learn how trains work and pass it down.

The girls parents can foot the bill for an overpass. They hardly need her college fund anymore.

I wonder if any part of her body was intact.

Sorry, but it is not realisitc to put overpasses on every travelled train crossing across the country to prevent things like this. You can only do so much to prevent people from injuring and killing themselves. Once you put an overpass over the road, some other kid could jump off the overpass an die, or someone could fall down a a wet overpass step and break a leg (saw thig happen in Boston once). Kids in this world need to know how to do a few things, and one of them is how to cross vehicle traffic. If they do not understand, they need to not be going anywhere by themselves.

This was a tragic accident, but these types of things are rare because 99.9999% of children allowed to walk down the road alone DO know better than to run in front of moving vehicles/trains. Especially if the girl dumped her bike to get off and run, she really should have known better, and that just makes this harder on the parents unfortunately. This turns into every parent's nightmare, because the parent will blame themselves for not doing more to help their daughter not make this mistake. They will live forever guilty about this 🙁
