I got a consultation on braces last week. I don't want to pay 3 grand for them or experience the pain

Every time they are tightened and adjusted it's hell. You don't even want to eat your teeth hurt so bad.

It will get better with a little time.

The spacers they put in hurt more than the braces themselves. :frown:

She has a brace on her pallet that has to be tightened 1/4 turn every morning.

i had this crazy appliance which fixed my overbite followed by braces which kept my mouth occupied for like 5 years, and never really felt any pain with them...i don't understand why people think they hurt so bad. the only part that hurt was when i was getting them off and the orthodontist had to use some tool to grind down my tooth which was uneven to the one next to it.

Oh dear lord, I feel her pain. I had one of those (Rapid palletal Expander) and they are a fate worse than death itself. Such pain I had never known before, and it made eating solid food nearly impossible.

Oh god she has a jaw expander. Ugg, i would hate to be the person that has to turn the key. That is one of the most painful things. I think they break your jaw and forces your jaw to heal afterwards in an expanded state.

When you first get them, the first week is brutal. After that, it's fine.. Except for the monthly adjustments, which can make your gums sore for 2 days.

it's your cat pawing at her mouth at night. ;)

Hopefully her teeth are needing them, many parents make braces a requirement. My ex-wife's parents actually had one of her lower incisors removed (lower central) to make a 'perfect' palm beach smile. She had three front lowers as a result, I noticed it, it was rare for anyone else too.

She ended up with the perfect smile but a lot of jaw problems.

My parents had to fork out 2 grand when I had braces 3-4 years back. :(

I had sever gingivitis and discoloration when I was brought in to do the thing. As you can imagine, I did not date a lot in high school.:p

Usually you get used to the pain.

When I was much younger, I had braces for about a week. I basically stopped eating and was a holy terror for my parents because I hurt enough that I was angry all the time. About 4 days into them, I got fed up and grabbed a set of needle-nose pliers and ripped the damn wires out of the brackets. Thank heaven that bastard of an orthodontist didn't fit the palate expander in the first fitting; I don't want to think what I would have done to get one of those things off.

Parents relented and decided that it wasn't worth the hastle of dealing with me and they had the doctor take the braces off.

Fast-forward to my Sr. year of HS when I got my wisdom teeth. They pushed everything _into_ alignment and corrected every functional problem the braces were supposed to fix. I absolutely loved my dentist's reaction, "You know, if you'd have gotten braces when you were younger, we'd have had to pull your wisdom teeth because they'd have messed everything up. Just letting everything mature on its own worked out best."

Needless to say, I don't believe in braces for cosmetic reasons at all, and I don't believe in them for minor functional issues in children. Now, something severe or in an adult, sure, go for it if you want, but otherwise I am firmly of the belief that braces are nothing more than a device concocted for bilking honest people out of their money.

Remember having braces back in middle school, but it didn't really hurt at all. It was annoying however especially removing rubberbands when your eating.

I liked mine, it was a sick form of pressure. What I hated was the thought of getting it removed, which felt like my teeth were being ripped out. After you get them off and they cut the nerves, I thought that'd be the worst part, but it wasn't that bad.
