A couple of weeks ago my Dad found someone selling a cherry picker for $4k on craigslist that had "issues" with it. So he went and checked it out and found the unit in good condition except for that person selling it had basically "MAcGyvered" the electrical system one to many times. The rest of the unit including the Hydraulics was in good condition. My Dad is electrical engineer so fixing the electrical system isn't a issue. So he talked the seller down to $3k and purchased the unit. He paid $500 for someone to move it to his house. He spent about a week fixing the electrical system and it now runs great.

He has found it very handy for trimming trees on his property. My step Mom convinced him to wear a safety harness. :)

Not for personal use. :) I am sure that something would be required if he used it in a business setting.

I bet he could rent that thing out too. If its not too big a pain in the ass a guerilla film crew could get some serious shots!

He probably could. He would need to get a bigger trailer and truck with more towing capacity. Right now he has to hire someone if it needs to be moved any distance with a big enough trailer and truck.

I would love to put a drunk friend in one and have him wake up that high up in the air but the drunk would probably die ruining the joke.

Just imagine when he gets bored trimming trees with that. Pretty soon, he's going to pair that with a megaphone and terrorize the neighborhood.

Ah, retirement. Just ask Boomer.

He can pimp it out and join Olds' chapter of hog riding geezers. Except you know...in a cherry picker :awe:

They are pretty freaking heavy. I rented a self propelled unit like that with a 50' or so working height... It weighed in at 11,000 pounds and that is ballast to keep the sucker from tipping as it had no outriggers.

It left indentations in the yard everywhere I drove it so they aren't always ideal for working on a house. The trailer model ones are lighter and better for that.

When someone buys a cherrypicker, they are going to find SOMETHING to do with it. Whether the trees need it or not, they are going to get trimmed! :)

What is it with old folks and heavy equipment? My grandfather has a backyard full of industrial quality stuff that he bought, tinkered with until he got working, and then maybe used once after that.

My Dad is [an] electrical engineer so fixing the electrical system isn't a issue.

I had an uncle who was a Ph.D. electrical engineer. Even taught part time at Vanderbilt. He could barely change a light bulb.
