They are pretty freaking heavy. I rented a self propelled unit like that with a 50' or so working height... It weighed in at 11,000 pounds and that is ballast to keep the sucker from tipping as it had no outriggers.

It left indentations in the yard everywhere I drove it so they aren't always ideal for working on a house. The trailer model ones are lighter and better for that.

Yeah it is very heavy because of the ballast to keep it upright. He cannot get it around the house because the flat areas around the house are not big enough. So of course he has a scissor lift for around the outside of the house.

There is still plenty of things on his 13 acres of property to use the cherry picket for. He also has a rental house a short distance away that he can just drive the unit to. In his retirement he has been building up a steady collection of machinery that he has been purchasing off Craigslist and then fixing it.

What do you do when you have two forklifts? Well you use the bigger forklift to lift up the smaller one so you can clean underneath it.

What is it with old folks and heavy equipment? My grandfather has a backyard full of industrial quality stuff that he bought, tinkered with until he got working, and then maybe used once after that.

With 13 acres my Dad has the room. He also puts a lot of the machinery to work. He recently used the big forklift he has to re-locate a palm tree at his rental property that the previous owner had decided to plan on top of the septic tank. He used his backhoe to dig all around it and then was able to lift up the entire 30 foot tall palm and move it to a better location. The right tool for the job. He uses the scissor lift all the time around the outside of the house.

He lives in Poway CA which is basically inland from San Diego. The area where he lives most of the houses are on 2-3 acres. He has one of the largest lot's left that hasn't been subdivided at around 13 acres. They bought the property about 30 years, it was originally a Avocado farm that was bank owned. The area he lives at his great, because he has property but is literally like 15 mins from Costco and Home Depot. So it is like he is living in the country but has all the amenities of a more urban area.

Cool, he lives in the High Valley area of Poway. It has been interesting to see the area change over the years. Now people are sub-dividing their lots and seeing Million dollar houses on 2-3 acres. My step Mom refuses to let my Dad subdivide their lot. She likes having their privacy.

Man I want one of those. Would have made shoveling my roof a breeze. Not to mention painting the exterior.

Jealous.

That's awesome! I could use that tomorrow and pretty much every single day for work. $4k is a steal. That's like price of one month rental.

If I had the land for it, I'd be doing that today. Heavy equipment is awesome.

Get with the times, who does not have a cherry picker in the driveway these days ? I do all our grocery runs in ours.

I've had a chance to ride in a 40ft one at "high speed" with the boom extended, that was crazy fun. Then there were speed bumps...we slowed down.

When I was a child I saw a naughty magazine with a picture of a cherry picker. I've never looked at them quite the same again.
