They are pretty freaking heavy. I rented a self propelled unit like that with a 50' or so working height... It weighed in at 11,000 pounds and that is ballast to keep the sucker from tipping as it had no outriggers.
It left indentations in the yard everywhere I drove it so they aren't always ideal for working on a house. The trailer model ones are lighter and better for that.
What is it with old folks and heavy equipment? My grandfather has a backyard full of industrial quality stuff that he bought, tinkered with until he got working, and then maybe used once after that.
does your dad live in OC? cuz where the hell do you find 13 acres around here.
He lives in Poway CA which is basically inland from San Diego. The area where he lives most of the houses are on 2-3 acres. He has one of the largest lot's left that hasn't been subdivided at around 13 acres. They bought the property about 30 years, it was originally a Avocado farm that was bank owned. The area he lives at his great, because he has property but is literally like 15 mins from Costco and Home Depot. So it is like he is living in the country but has all the amenities of a more urban area.
so what's it actually worth?
Cool toy and good score but why is he molesting perfectly good palm trees?

And it is rather bad if they fall on people/property/cars/etc.Those palm leaves die and just hang below the rest of the leaves like a beard. Makes a great nesting ground for rats and other vermin.
Hehe, I work right near there.
I had an uncle who was a Ph.D. electrical engineer. Even taught part time at Vanderbilt. He could barely change a light bulb.
