My dad's girlfriend came to me to brag

"Check it out, it's got all the files on it from the office, but the only thing I'm not sure about is how to work on them and how to transfer them back."

I explain that it would probably be best to copy them to her computer, work on them, then move them back. This confused her, so I snagged the drive and put it into my laptop so I could show her.

Me: "Um, you didn't copy the files over"
Her: "Yeah I did, they're all right there, you just have to click that *points at icon*"
Me: "That's just a shortcut, you didn't actually copy anything. It's only going to show you whatever that computer has on it, see? *clicks*"
Her: "Oh, well, thanks for showing me. So how do I actually put stuff on it?"

I demonstrate with a couple random images I had in My Documents.

Her: "Oh, well they didn't tell me that in the instructions. Thanks." *leaves*

My dad and his girlfriend try, but they just don't get it...

My BIL found out after a computer crash that his bookkeeper had been backing up the shortcut to her accounting program, and not any of the actual data that they'd just lost.

I know it's funny, but it's also an example of bad design that shortcuts can be confused with the items they point to.

Pics?

I don't want to have any permanent reminders how how fat and ugly she is and neither do you. Trust me on this.

I thought you were going to say, "My dad's girlfriend came to me to brag...about having power of attorney"

My dad's still gonna be kicking for a while. At least she better hope so, otherwise she'll be SOL on everything, cuz she doesn't have a real job. She just helps him out at the office. If he goes, she's on her arse with his debt from the business (he's a lawyer, with his own tiny practice).

"Dad's Girlfriend", for some reason, that just seems odd to me.

She's pretty much his common law wife. She's been living with us for like 5 years now. I'll be damned if I'm gonna call her mom. I don't even like my biological mother, let alone her. My dad doesn't have the best taste in women.

I wouldn't say that except for the most basic user. It's really not that hard to tell. :disgust:

its easy to dismiss that comment as stupid since you understand the use of the object of which it is applied. being short sighted and thinking you are above other people simply because you understand how an icon works is the exact opposite of what you are prescribing to be: intelligent. there are undoubtedly several professions of which you know nothing about and the analog of "saving an icon" would be a stupid mistake you would make, so take your rolling eyes and grow up.

yes, i know how to save files, not icons, and no, i didnt take personal offense to your post. immaturity and self-serving superiority annoy me is all.

I don't see how the hell you make shortcuts on the thumbdrive. If I move stuff from one folder to another given that they're on a different partition, it copies.

I'm guessing that she had everything in a folder, and made a shortcut to that folder on her desktop, then when she got the thumbdrive she just copied the shortcut to it.

Why copy them over at all? Just work on the files right on the thumb drive..

QFT

You know, I've seen more corrupted files from people doing that than you normally would. Meaning, every time someone calls in with an issue opening a file, it's because they were working on it from the flash drive.

Not to say this is the norm, as it could quite possibly be the fact people buy the cheap crap all the time. But I'm paranoid with my data to begin with.

i agree, not worth the risk. i don't want to have to rely on removable storage. plus it only takes like a second, plus in order to get it on the flash drive in the first place she'd have to copy it to it from her computer at the office, so it's not like she wouldn't have already learned how to do that.
