My dad just picked up his Sig 9mm P226 yesterday

I've been thinking about getting a handgun for awhile now and after seeing and holding my dad's new p226 yesterday I think I'm going to get myself one. Unfortunately he picked it up late in the afternoon so we couldn't make it out to the range plus I had to return home. I've never shot a Sig and it's been awhile since I've actually shot a handgun but just the way it fits in my hands I know it's going to be a dream to shoot.

I like the more compact 229 so I'm going to start looking at those. Now I just need to decide between a .40 S&W or 9 mm. What round would fit my needs better. This is for personal defense and light shooting at the range (once or twice a month).

Edit: Also, what are the pros and cons of ordering a handgun over the internet through a FFL gun dealer?

.40 has more stopping power, 9mm is cheaper to shoot.

Pick which is more important to you.

Also, the 226 is a bit nicer to shoot than the 229 simply because more weight means less kick.

I always say go 9mm. The ammo is cheaper and HP ammo is still going to stop someone effectively. Everyone I've met who says 9mm doesnt' stop people either was using ball ammo, or has never shot anyone. So until I shoot someone with HP 9mm ammo and it doesn't stop them, I'm going to suggest 9mm.

My favorite 9mm out right now is the walther P99 (It's my favorite 40 as well). I carry a walther PPS and love it as well (I own both as well as a SA XD).

im in the market for a handgun my self. have been looking at a glock 23 9mm or a springfield XD but im sorta undecided. id love to get a sig but they are out of my price range.

edit: i should also note ive been looking at a ruger lcp since its cheap...the ammo is cheap...and i can conceal it easily.

You can't go wrong with a glock or a XD. They are both workhorse guns.

I like .40 a lot, esp that you can rechamber it and have like two guns in one.

.357 sig is an interesting round...I am considering it purely due to the fireworks display it gives off when firing.

My brother's .380ACP sig is probably the easiest gun to shoot I have played with outside .22's.

I like a .45 too but less than full sized don't feel accurate to me. and fullsize is a bit much for a daily carry if I wanted too.

My dad took the best approach, three various .45s, a 9mm, a .40mm/.357sig and a .22 target pistol.

I may end up with his 9mm due to my recent burglary...I am on the fence still on it with my wife.

I've carried a p226 for a long time, as a side arm, it's extremely reliable.

The p229 was suggested but failed every single test. Either way, you want the 9mm.

I just gotta say, are you sure you don't want to go 1911?

I'll agree with this as well. I am not a 1911 fan at all, but to each their own.

Personally I am a Glock fan boy. They are as reliable as anything can be, will eat pretty much anything you feed them, and their pretty cheap to boot. I have a G22 for work and a 27 for my own time.

40 vs. 9, 40 all the weigh for personal defense. Will a 9mm stop someone, sure. Does the 40 still have more stopping power, yes. When faced with a drugged thug I'll take the 40 everyday. If it wasn't for the fact I was I carry 40 for work I would go with 45.

What you need to do is shoot whatever you are looking at before buying. It doesn't matter the stopping power if you can't hit what you are shooting at. If you are more comfortable with the 9 then go with it. Be accurate is much more important than shear stopping power.

Don't forget the $200 "Cash for Klunkers" deal that Sig has going on right now. It's got a thread here in OT, plus another one in Hot Deals. 🙂

I wish Glock had better grips...they feel too boxy for me.

The gun I really fell in love with was the TRP Operator .45...I really want to fire a Kimber too though.
