While this wouldn't be an unreasonable request, I own a hyundai and have never heard of nor run into this problem.

It is not unheard of.....you HAVE to have proof of all oil changes every 3k miles and those service intervals I said earlier. I know this because one of my best friends is a service writer for Hyundai. If you don't do any of that, say BYE BYE to your warranty.

I know it sounds stupidly obvious, but trust me, my friend has made plenty of people pay $1000+ prices to fix issues that would have been covered if they kept up with the scheduled maintenance.

Sorry, I still don't believe that. Either your friend is exaggerating/talking about a very specific situation, or things have changed. Especially considering the maintenance schedule on my hyundai doesn't call for oil changes until every 7500 miles. The dealer could not possibly void warranty coverage when the car's own documentation calls for a different schedule.

Besides that, none of my warranty paperwork mentions anything about providing proof of regular maintenance. As someone else mentioned, if you haven't done ANY maintenance on your car, and the problem can be traced back to a very late oil change for example, then you might have a hard time. But even in that circumstance, with enough complaining, I'm sure they'd do the repairs...or at least cover some of it under warranty.

Hyundai can't afford to tarnish its name by being nit-picky about their warranties. If they advertise them as much as they do, they will stick by them.

I suppose that is why the oil change interval listed in the owners manual and in the warranty booklet is 7,500 miles

Nope. My 2000 Elantra's transmission blows up @ 37K. Dealer replace it without much of a hassle. Only service done at dealer was transmission oil flush @30K.

I have been thinking about getting one of these. How did your father manage to get it for 18.5k out the door? Thats an excellent price MSRP is 26k I would take it for 23k easily. Did he know someone or are they just going for that good of a price?

Well one thing is it would be difficult to blame your tranny problem on oil changes especially if you got the tranny flushed at the dealer. Have you had any other problems. Looking at the Consumer Reports it would appear they arent as good as Toyota/Subaru/Honda but that they are moving up quickly in build quality. If it can be expected to have tranny problems often I will not purchase one.

My 02 Elentra GT recently hit 40,000 miles and is working great.

No problems whatsoever

My 01 Hyundai Elantra just passed 93k miles without a problem. Also, I've heard people talking about that scheduled maintenance / warranty crap and have never actually read anything on my warranty or my wives warranty about it. Actually the dealership has been very lax with me about the warranty and have performed services not in the warranty. I took my car in for an oil change and while there they replaced a broken headlight for free. Also my wife's 2003 Santa Fe had a big scratch on her door about 2 weeks after we bought it and they repainted the door free. That was great.

This car is freaking hawt. And recycling the old best selling accord design is freaking genius ever since the current accord totally look like ASS.

$1000 off for Hyundai Royalty (we owned a 96 sonata before)
$1000 in leu of higher APR (6.9%), BUT we put a kickass downpayment of $6500 + financed at 36 months. In this scenario, higher APR doesn't really matter.
$1300 dealership discount

MSRP is $21,950 including destination charge.
