My current arcade cabinet "project"

Since this forum is pretty much dead, I figure I might as well post my little project I am working on currently.

I have owned a Killer Instinct 2 cabinet since 2001. Some of you long timers may remember me posting about it way back when. Back then I purchased it for $300. It was a steal back then and it's even more of a steal now with the prices of these games now. I could sell my KI2 PCB/HDD (more on that later) for more than I paid for the full cabinet 19 years ago.

The past 7 years the cabinet has been sitting in my garage. The previous 7 years it had been sitting in my moms basement while I lived in a small 1BR apartment. Through all of this, it has always been in working condition. The last time I had really messed with it though, the monitor was starting to go a little bit. It would sometimes have this blue-ish hue to it, and the brightness just isn't there. This is a very common issue that happens with these old monitors and it is very repairable (more on that later).

With the popularity of these Arcade1Up machines in recent times, I started to get some interest in arcade games again and I saw myself starting to maybe want to get one of them. But then I saw the actual size of them and I lost interest. They are tiny and you can't even fit 2 adults side by side to play fighting games on them. The only one I would consider is Golden Tee since it's single player and it has a trackball. But at $400, that is way more than I'd pay for it.

I started doing a little bit of research and came across this thing called pi2jamma.

http://arcadeforge.net/Pi2Jamma-Pi2SCART/Pi2Jamma::248.html

Since I have a spare pi3 sitting around, it got my interest. I then decided I was going to move it out of my garage into my basement and turn it into an arcade emulation station. The only problem is that this thing is HEAVY. According to the KI flyer, it is 400lbs. Moving it into and out of my moms house, I knew how much of a PITA it is to move. So I decided that I was going to basically gut it to make it weigh less before I moved it.

The cabinet is pretty empty but it is a lot of wood. You can see on the inside here, it's not much to it. I did remove that wooden panel on the left side there with the fan on it, simply because that dropped it even like 10-15lbs.

2fTwGQX.png

Then I took off the control panel which probably was like 20-30lbs.

PjoOtEV.png

Then I took the monitor out and it was ready to go. It probably weighs like 80lbs or so.

JJpf97K.png

Oh and prior to buying this, someone had carved a vagina into Orchid on the side. It gives it character lol.

S4XvLAI.png

My buddies were coming over the next day so I had them help me move it downstairs. I just put it on a dolly and moved it up a few stairs with them supporting it on the other side to help push it up, then down 3 steps with them on the other side, and then down like 10 or so into the basement. Good thing I took the control panel off because that extra 1.5 inches or so really helped get it down the door way.

Then after about 30 minutes or so I ended up getting it back together and all was well. It was kind of tough to get the monitor mounted back by myself but I managed.

HJCk35i.png

I had Killer Instinct 1 in there at the time. I also had KI2, and Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. Randomly on Saturday I was at my moms house helping her move stuff, and I came into a box that I had to move that happened to have the other 3 JAMMA boards in them. I hadn't even powered them on in more than 14 years, and unfortunately I didn't have much luck.

MK1 - MK1 (and MK2) have additional sound boards. Well my MK1 sound board is jacked up completely. No light comes on or anything on it. The actual game works just fine though.

MK2 - As with MK1, the sound did not work. However, according to the diagnostics tests, it SHOULD be working. It has lights on the board as well so I don't know why it's not working. However, the sound boards on many Midway games were VERY flaky and known to have these issues where they go out without warning.

KI2 - I powered it on with the HDD attached and nothing - no image on screen, no lights on PCB, nothing. I unplugged the HDD and the same result on screen, however the red light for HDD came on on the PCB. I am thinking the HDD is just dead and I might order the complact flash version of the HDD that people sell. I replaced my KI1 HDD with it and it is much better because you have no moving parts.

I had no clue how much these JAMMA boards are worth. On arcade forums people are offering $450 for KI2, $250 for MK2, etc. I don't plan on selling em even if I get them working, but damn it's crazy the value they hold.

The next step is to get my pi2jamma. I ordered it Saturday but it's coming from Germany so it's going to take some time to get here.

I also am probably going to take my monitor to this guy an hour away and have him basically rejuvenate it so that it will be back to normal. It actually works fine and stuff but it is quite a bit dull.

This one video kind of sucks because it was with the lights off at night, so it's not QUITE as dark as it looks in this video.

This one is a little brighter and I was trying to explain this "bug" I realized with the controls in MK2. I think it's just normal for the game though, however I don't remember it being that way at all. Based on feedback from other forums, it's just a normal bug though.

Following.

I've considered doing similar with a MiSTer, since there are so many classic arcade cores for it. Of course, the selection could never compare to an rPi and it doesn't have hardware as modern as Killer Instinct but it has a lot of the '80s machines plus Neo Geo replicated at a lower level than emulation.

You can get Pi hats like RetroTink for using rPi on analog displays, so I think I'd prefer that on a CRT television... unless someone makes a JAMMA switch that lets both co-exist in the cabinet without fiddling with the wire harness. ;) I'd really love some KI/KI2.

I've gone back and forth on an arcade cabinet myself. Currently I'm glad I haven't done it since I'm planning a cross-country move, and that's one less bulky item to worry about. I can still see one in my long-term future though.

So my pi2jamma finally shipped yesterday, after ordering Saturday. It kind of sucks it took that long to get moving considering it's coming from Europe. It was in the "UPS has received tracking information" type status for like 3 days until yesterday too.

I have been playing around with my MK2 board and trying to figure out what is wrong with the sound. I don't know much about this stuff and am learning a bit as I go from the arcade-museum forums. After all these years I finally got my first multimeter and was playing with it last night to check voltages on my MK2 PCB. It's getting the -5v which was the first thing people said to check since the board requires it.

The next step is to check if the soundboard is actually getting the -5v (and 5v) so I'll check that next. I have the pinout from the manual so it should be easy to test with the multimeter. I was just too tired last night so didn't get around to it.

The guy I talked to about fixing my monitor said that worst case scenario would be about $230, which would include cap kit, reflow, and doin actual work to the tube itself. I think once I get my pi2jamma up and running if I feel like the monitor isn't quite up to par that I'm just going to do it. It's going to be a hassle to take it out again and lug it an hour in my car one way, then I'll probably have to pick it up another day, but in the end it will be worth it to get it looking brand new again.

I also found this guy selling KI2 CF kits for $28 on those same forums and he agreed that if he sends me one of the kits and my game still doesn't work, that he will refund me $14 and I can just keep the kit. I think I'm going to just do that. I asked if I could just return it and that was his response which I'm fine with.

Got it cleaned up a bit and put in it's home spot (I think) until my pi2jamma comes.

GnaQvRm.jpg

I just got a multimeter and have been trying to trouble shoot my MK2 sound board and hopefully can trouble shoot my KI2 PCB. I'm just trying to get some ideas/help from the arcade-museum forums about what to test for and how to narrow down things because I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing. Power is going to both the MK2 sound board and the KI2 PCB so I'm kind of waiting to hear what people say. It's kind of a fun thing to at least tinker with until my pi2jamma comes.

Nice project! I once owned a Robocop arcade cab, bought it at an operator's auction back in my mid-20s when I was working for a startup. I just had it languishing in my foyer for a while, I sold it to someone, they turned it into something else, and mailed me back the PCBs. In theory, I still have them, somewhere...

I was kind of surprised that my PCBs that had been sitting for decade+ didn't work as they did prior. But also kinda not surprised because they are so old and I know those types of things can just go bad over time.

Some of the more-or-less modern ones, like Capcom CPS2 boards, have a battery to hold encryption keys in a type of CMOS RAM, for their protection system, and if the battery goes, there goes your boardset! (There are tutorials for safely replacing them, if it's not too late.)

Yep. CPS2 Suicide. Capcom definitely didn't want to see CPS2 bootlegs!

So I'm kinda hype because I just fixed my MK1 sound to work. I flipped over the sound board and there was clearly a trace that came up and burnt out. No clue how that happened or remember that from 14 years ago lol. So I just wired the 2 points instead.

xwXPWDx.jpg

Turned it on and heard the little MK "ting" sound and was like OH **** ITS WORKING!

I just wired up the kick harness while watching the World Series and it's all gravy now!

The sound in this game is so good.

Awesome! Even the simple fixes are rewarding. :) A few years ago I got a "broken" Neo Geo MVS MV1-FZ board (compact) along with an MV-1 (original). I didn't have a JAMMA cab so I waited to troubleshoot until I had a GBS8200 and an arcade PSU to hook it all up to a VGA monitor. In the mean time I burned a diagnostics BIOS (NeoDIAG ROM) and Universe BIOS (UniBIOS) for both boards in preparation for the troubleshooting and upgrading I'd have to do. Turns out, I'd accidentally fixed it before even powering on! The only problem was a bad factory BIOS ROM and the FZ1 just happened to be the only compact board with a socketed 40-pin DIP BIOS like the MV-1. ;)

Accidental repair. :D

That placement just begs for a modern setup if you're going emulation. Curved OLED display, with a counter curved 4 player control panel (that can be changed so you could swap it out for say two racing wheels). Wire up 4 stools with bass shakers in them (or maybe just build the stools so they're basically are sub cabinets) to add some extra tactile oomph.

At the very least you need to change that light out. And that carpet can't work either. It needs to be 10 year out of date grimy stained patterned carpet.

To keep with the motif you could at least make the 1st player joystick flesh colored. Or is his extremities just black for some reason?

That light is going to be off whenever I'm playing. That is the back of my home theater.

And no chance I'd ever put some newer display in there. The lagless CRT completely owns any newer displays for old school gaming. And the resolution on them is part of the charm.

After I got out of college and had my first apartment I did one of these. Local arcade was selling a few cabs and I picked up a Virtua Fighter 1 cab for $200. I gutted it and replaced it with a computer running mame. Painted the cab and put new mame stickers on everything. Had a local glass shop cut me a new tinted glass panel for the front. Bought the best 21" Sony flat tube crt I could afford. I put in better speakers and a separate amp. Picked out the best button/micro switches I could afford.

We use to have parties at our house and people loved it. We use to do rounds of NBA Jam TE and a few others games. I ended up giving it away to a friend later on. Personally I used it mainly for fighting games and things like Metal Slug.

LOL that is a long ass time ago!

I'm annoyed at how long this damn pi2jamma is taking to get here. I ordered it 2 Saturdays ago. It's last update is in NYC as of October 30th and it hasn't moved. I think USPS now has it and will be delivering it.

Waiting for deliveries is the worst thing in the world. Especially when something like this ends up coming on a Monday and you lose the weekend to tinker with it.

This weekend is shot anyways. My cousin's getting married tomorrow and it's like an all day thing then we're staying at the hotel. Sunday will be recovery day.

And I'm pissed cause I can't go to the Nat's parade. And tonight my buddy invited me to a Caps game in a suite. I could go but I can't take advantage of it and would get there just as the game starts. And if I'm paying $160 for all I can eat and drink, I want to be able to enjoy it.

I was joking about the light, ya know, kinda like I was with the carpet (I mean, I clearly expect you to also rip up your carpet and replace it with stained crap carpet you'd find in an arcade nostalgia trip...).

You care about lag but are going emulation? Ok. To each their own.

Latency with RGBPi, Pi2JAMMA, or RetroTink Ultimate is very low (essentially totally zero for output). Future Pis will be able to further reduce or eliminate emulation latency using run-ahead emulation techniques. Even so, I think I'd prefer a custom cab for Pi stuff and a MiSTer for a JAMMA cab. :)

...I just recalled yesterday's RetroRGB episode said that the RetroTink Ultimate is going EOL because you can now get 240p RGB out from the HDMI port using a simple VGA adapter due to new techniques for the Pi's HDMI output.

Still, Pi2JAMMA and other RGB solutions add a bit more.

Another update finally about my pi2jamma. After sitting in the Failicy ISC New York (no clue wtf that is) since October 4th, it's now at a processing center in Queens, NY and says it's in transit to the destination.

I don't order much from overseas, but I ordered this item on October 20th and didn't know it would take THIS long to get here.

EDIT:

Apparently waiting at the ISC facility for days is common.

Indeed. My copy of Akumajou Dracula X Chi no Rondo (Castlevania Dracula X Rondo of Blood) for PC Engine Super CD-ROM² sat there for 10 straight days recently.

Customs can be a roller coaster. I've had things blow through in a day, others take a week+. As far as I've seen, no rhyme or reason to it.
