Since this forum is pretty much dead, I figure I might as well post my little project I am working on currently.
I have owned a Killer Instinct 2 cabinet since 2001. Some of you long timers may remember me posting about it way back when. Back then I purchased it for $300. It was a steal back then and it's even more of a steal now with the prices of these games now. I could sell my KI2 PCB/HDD (more on that later) for more than I paid for the full cabinet 19 years ago.
The past 7 years the cabinet has been sitting in my garage. The previous 7 years it had been sitting in my moms basement while I lived in a small 1BR apartment. Through all of this, it has always been in working condition. The last time I had really messed with it though, the monitor was starting to go a little bit. It would sometimes have this blue-ish hue to it, and the brightness just isn't there. This is a very common issue that happens with these old monitors and it is very repairable (more on that later).
With the popularity of these Arcade1Up machines in recent times, I started to get some interest in arcade games again and I saw myself starting to maybe want to get one of them. But then I saw the actual size of them and I lost interest. They are tiny and you can't even fit 2 adults side by side to play fighting games on them. The only one I would consider is Golden Tee since it's single player and it has a trackball. But at $400, that is way more than I'd pay for it.
I started doing a little bit of research and came across this thing called pi2jamma.

Since I have a spare pi3 sitting around, it got my interest. I then decided I was going to move it out of my garage into my basement and turn it into an arcade emulation station. The only problem is that this thing is HEAVY. According to the KI flyer, it is 400lbs. Moving it into and out of my moms house, I knew how much of a PITA it is to move. So I decided that I was going to basically gut it to make it weigh less before I moved it.
The cabinet is pretty empty but it is a lot of wood. You can see on the inside here, it's not much to it. I did remove that wooden panel on the left side there with the fan on it, simply because that dropped it even like 10-15lbs.
Then I took off the control panel which probably was like 20-30lbs.
Then I took the monitor out and it was ready to go. It probably weighs like 80lbs or so.
Oh and prior to buying this, someone had carved a vagina into Orchid on the side. It gives it character lol.
My buddies were coming over the next day so I had them help me move it downstairs. I just put it on a dolly and moved it up a few stairs with them supporting it on the other side to help push it up, then down 3 steps with them on the other side, and then down like 10 or so into the basement. Good thing I took the control panel off because that extra 1.5 inches or so really helped get it down the door way.
Then after about 30 minutes or so I ended up getting it back together and all was well. It was kind of tough to get the monitor mounted back by myself but I managed.
I had Killer Instinct 1 in there at the time. I also had KI2, and Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. Randomly on Saturday I was at my moms house helping her move stuff, and I came into a box that I had to move that happened to have the other 3 JAMMA boards in them. I hadn't even powered them on in more than 14 years, and unfortunately I didn't have much luck.
MK1 - MK1 (and MK2) have additional sound boards. Well my MK1 sound board is jacked up completely. No light comes on or anything on it. The actual game works just fine though.
MK2 - As with MK1, the sound did not work. However, according to the diagnostics tests, it SHOULD be working. It has lights on the board as well so I don't know why it's not working. However, the sound boards on many Midway games were VERY flaky and known to have these issues where they go out without warning.
KI2 - I powered it on with the HDD attached and nothing - no image on screen, no lights on PCB, nothing. I unplugged the HDD and the same result on screen, however the red light for HDD came on on the PCB. I am thinking the HDD is just dead and I might order the complact flash version of the HDD that people sell. I replaced my KI1 HDD with it and it is much better because you have no moving parts.
I had no clue how much these JAMMA boards are worth. On arcade forums people are offering $450 for KI2, $250 for MK2, etc. I don't plan on selling em even if I get them working, but damn it's crazy the value they hold.
The next step is to get my pi2jamma. I ordered it Saturday but it's coming from Germany so it's going to take some time to get here.
I also am probably going to take my monitor to this guy an hour away and have him basically rejuvenate it so that it will be back to normal. It actually works fine and stuff but it is quite a bit dull.
This one video kind of sucks because it was with the lights off at night, so it's not QUITE as dark as it looks in this video.
This one is a little brighter and I was trying to explain this "bug" I realized with the controls in MK2. I think it's just normal for the game though, however I don't remember it being that way at all. Based on feedback from other forums, it's just a normal bug though.
