AHHH! I just got a call from Fogdog sports and they were curious as to why I put my phone number in incorrectly (only off by one number) and was having an online order shipped to Columbus, OHIO. It turns out someone placed an order for like weightlifting gloves and some clothing for roughly $120.00 on my card. I need to cancel my card but my bank is closed and my card is also my ATM card. I am also not at home but currently at school. I'm pissed. I won't have a bank card for a while and now I'm all jaded towards online ordering 'cuz I know someone must have ganked my info from online somewhere cuz I still have my card and how could they know all my info? Thank god someone at FOGDOG has a brain and realized the inconsistency and helped me out. I could have been hurtin'. Anyone have any recommendations on what to do? I have a message in at my bank to cancel my card but what else can I do before monday's business hours roll around? Help!

Don't know about your current situation, but for further online purchasing you should use a credit card instead of a debit card.

Your credit card company/bank should have a 24/7 phone#. Whatever the number, just call and I'm sure you'll get transferred to the right place. Don't wait for the message to get to them on monday because spending all your cash takes only a second. It's a hassle to fight all transactions made on your card so you better be quick about it.

Edit: Oops, made the mistake of assuming that your atm card could be used as a credit card and not a debit card  If your bank is a large bank ie Washington Mutual or Bank of America, they have a 24/7 #. If you're using a small bank, you should switch to a bank which has around the clock customer service.

Get a credit card that has a one time use number for online transactions

Further online purchasing will not be happening for a while, but you're absolutely correct about that credit card thing. Stupid bank cards suck sometimes.

There have been countless TV spots and warnings about using debit cards, whether or not they are tied to your credit card. They all tell you not to own a debit card. They all tell you to close out the debit card tied to your checking account.

If you got burned then you must have ignored al the warnings.

Too bad.

Damn, the card is through MasterCard. There is no number on the back nor on my bank's online site to call for emergency. I called MasterCard emergency number, got transferred around like five times and then the guy says he can't help me. What the hell is this sh:t? Well, there is no like overdraft or anything and only like sixty bucks in my account now anyway, so hopefully nothing further can happen to screw me more. Oh well. Whatever. I'll have my damn bank sort it out on Monday. And if not, who cares? It's just money.

Really? I must not watch enough TV (seriously!) because the only TV commercials I've seen relating to debit cards are the Visa debit/check cards promoting them. Who sponsors the anti-debit card ads?

And Smacksmackums: what bank is it? Maybe someone here can throw you an 24-hour 800 number or two.

Where do you live HappyPuppy? I watch TV pretty much all day. It's basically my life and have not seen one ad like this. Perhaps I'm watching different channels than you or live in a different part of the country. If I had heard these warnings I probably would have ignored them anyway, but since I haven't seen or heard or read these warnings anywhere, tell me... How am I supposed to ignore something I haven't witnessed?
There's no need to insult me, but thanks anyway, I'm always up for a laugh.

It's through a local bank that doesn't have more than 6 locations throughout my state, MAINE (regardless of what my profile says). I've searched all around and talked with my parents about it and have calmed down, there's not a whole lot I can do now. I'll just have to wait it out.

I work for a large data processor who processes transactions for thousands of banks. During their off hours, we also 'hot card' stolen cards.

Call 1-800-VISA-911 - they should be able to get you to the datacenter that processes your cards and deactivate it immediately. If nothing else, you will have a record that you called immediately to protect your liability.

It has MasterCard stamped right on the front of it. Why would I call a visa number?

Because they will transer you to the mastercard number. I don't remember the number, but VISA should do it.

Most credit card information is not stolen from online. Ever use your card at a restaurant or bar? Ever used it at a store? It is more likely that your information was stolen from there.
