My third rig...

Its a Celeron 1.3 (retail cooling)
Soyo TISU
(256 MB TOTAL) 128 x 2 MB RAM (CL 3)
Segate Barracuda 4 40GB
Toshiba 16 DVD

Now my CPU temperature is 44C (112F) and mobo is 30C (86F)
When I put it in I had 41C at MOST then I removed the "black" stuff on the retail heatsink and put on the cpu Artic Silver 3 Premium Silver Polysynthetic now it went up to 44C.

Did I miss something? Is it not supposed to be better now? Now after 10 minutes in Windows, it automatically goes to Screensaver mode, when I return to the system It feels like it is slowed down.

I go to MY Computer, Righ Click, Properties and it says Celeron 1300 and under it, it states 651 Mhz.
Any help is appreciated.

I also have a Volcano 7 heatsink... BUT it does not fit on my PC (for chassis reasons)

That does seem strange...did you properly clean both the HSF and the CPU as per the instructions on the arctic silver website before applying the AS3? Also, are you sure you didn't use too much AS3?

Too much artic silver? To be honest I did put quite a lot, it was my first time doing it on a heatsink embedded on a cpu.

I had done it before on a P3 and Athlon but it was a small core.

So I had Shutdown the system, waited until it cooled (2 hours) now its back at 1300 MHZ. Good news. I played UT2K3 for 45 minutes. Then I went away from the computer. When I returned I saw my screen saver. I the proceeded to move my mouse and check my system again. AGAIN its at 651 MHZ. I don't believe it!! WHY WOULD it go down? WHY NOT SHUT off or something else? I know Intel has a overheating thing. But is 44C too hot? What is the normal operating temperature for a Tualitin base cpu? Man this is getting me worried. I don't know if its my CPU, motherboard or my own mistake with the arctic silver. Man o man.

You think trying to use the Thermaltake Volcano 7 would help? It is bigger and has a 80mm fan on it.

It sounds like to me that you have two problems, that may not be related. Some motherboards and operating systems do not report the CPU correctly, see here. What operating system R U running? I would reccomend a third party CPU identifier program, there are a few out there. Here is one.

What does your computer say when it POSTS? If it posts correctly, yet in the OS shows something different, your OS may at fault. If it does not POST correctly, you may have an old BIOS or even faulty CPU. Try reseting the BIOS to defaults, or flashing it. Whether your CPU is really running slower is a different story. Run a benchmark program like Sisoft Sandra and compare to a similar system. If your BIOS is up to date, your operating system is new, and the POST matches the O/S listed speed, you may have a bad CPU. You may run a search on Google with your MB model number to see if someone else has the same problem.

Are you trying to overclock? I had one motherboard that would allow the change in the BIOS but the next time it POSTED it reset the CPU speed to a lower default number. I suggest trying it non-overclocked. (MB's make interesting targets in a trap shoot) Find the default setting of your MB, is this the speed you keep seeing? There may be connection.

As far as the temps go, check for too much goop, there should only be a thin film. If not, check for cables over or dust in the heatsink. My temps shoot up with only a few specks of lint in my grill. Canned air baby. Don't put your unit in the dishwasher (just kidding).

Please repost if you try these and they fail, with more info like M/B model, OS and Rev., etc.
