My CPU fan is not working! (My motherboard was giving a false alert, problem solved!)

OK, so I just built my new computer: 1.8 GHz Pentium Dual Core, 1024 MB of DDR memory, and a 120 GB SATA hard drive. Since I didn't had the SATA power cable, I decided to grab my IDE hard drive and my DVD burner, and then I plugged them into my computer's primary IDE channel, and then plugged them to my computer's power.

When I turned on the power... I almost became diabetic. The CPU fan was not spinning! It just moves a little bit, then stops, moves a little bit, stops, and so on, but it never gathers enough speed!

Since I can get a roasted processor that way... I need a way to solve this ASAP!!! :Q

Relax, deep breaths...now go ahead and grab your motherboard's manual. Look through the BIOS sections for fan control or PC health information. There is more than likely a temperature or otherwise controlled fan system which is enabled by default. Try disabling it and seeing if your fan spins constantly.

Is my CPU gonna take any damage by doing that? I mean, I made sure I put some cooling paste on the heat sink, but I still fear the worst...

Besides, I even set an option on the BIOS that causes the computer to give a really nasty beep when the CPU fan is failing.

Like I said, grab the manual and take a look. The explanation there should make it clear.

OK, so after leaving only the ATX power connector, I found out that my CPU fan was working again. That was after removing the ATX 12 volt connector, the one with 4 pins you plug far, far away from the ATX power connector. Then I put the 12 V connector, and the CPU fan stops spinning again.

Something strange is going on...

So, after winding up the courage to open up the BIOS setup and disabling the "CPU Fan Failure Alert", an annoying whine played by my system when a fan stops, I disabled the automatic fan speed control, and voila! Turns out the fan alert is so paranoid, it beeps even when the automatic speed control is stopping the fan.

For now, problem solved! :D
