Your story reminded me of my cousin. He's unbelievably cheap.
He has a tiny car but when he needs to take his whole family somewhere for the day, he always borrows his father's car which is a big Ford. Never puts gas in it. And he could pay cash for a Hummer. Whenever there's a need to take up a collection for something at work, he always volunteers to do it (that way no one ever knows he doesn't contribute a dime).
He and his wife make tons of money but if there's any event where people have to split the bill (going in on a present, or out to dinner) he will figure it out to the penny to make sure he isn't paying a nickel more than someone else.
You'd think if you had a great job and went to lunch with your sister, a single mom who has a low-level job as a clerk, you might pick up the tab, right? Not with him. 50/50 every time.
