What's a good gift for someone about to go into the military?

Sub $50, please.

Buy him condoms. Tell him to use them all before he leaves. That way he'll be good for awhile.

Nothing, wait till he graduates boot first. He won't be able to take personal belongings and crap with him in there anyway. It'll be useless to him. It'll be useful once he gets out though, which is why I suggest after boot. (My brother in law finished boot not too long ago - I got him a MP3 player which he seems to enjoy on log jogs)

Coffee. On another forum someone over there right now was saying how great it is to get some good coffee there. Something you would probably send to them later though.

mp3 player. i can get lonely there
leatherman/swiss army knife. better than what the marines give out. extremely useful.(so are zippos)
calling card isnt too worthwhile. on base, calling is steeply discounted or free, in combat zones, phone conversation is severly restricted

callin card = best idea. however, i would buy him an extra pistol or a knife that fits in their boot or something since its all urban warfare and what not

He cannot take much with him to basic. So rule out any weapons and electronics.

New running shoes.

Sport socks

Underwear (Briefs or boxer briefs)

A couple extra toothbrushes.

Floss

A bunch of disposable razors

Sunscreen

Anti-perspirant

Calling card

Soap caddy

Small religious book (bible or whatnot) (if he's religious)

Some disposable cameras.

Stationary to write home with and stamps

A haircut and a going away party. All his friends and family getting together to tell him how proud they are of him and how much they appreciate what he's about to do for them is the best gift he'll be able to get.

I can't imagine the Marines are any different than the Navy. If I would have taken any of that stuff it would have been confiscated.

I would ask one of my jarhead friends but they are in Iraq.

I was allowed all of this (I didn't try the cameras) when I went in the army.

Personal grooming aids are allowed, just no electric razors.

You can most certainly have running shoes. If you do not, they take you to the PX to buy some. The armed forces hasn't run in boots for over 2 decades now.

The do give you a list of items to bring...well at least the army does...

He is not going to be able to have a MP3 player or anything else like this in boot camp.

The best thing one can do for someone in boot camp/basic is write them letters.
