Nothing, wait till he graduates boot first. He won't be able to take personal belongings and crap with him in there anyway. It'll be useless to him. It'll be useful once he gets out though, which is why I suggest after boot. (My brother in law finished boot not too long ago - I got him a MP3 player which he seems to enjoy on log jogs)

calling card isnt too worthwhile. on base, calling is steeply discounted or free, in combat zones, phone conversation is severly restricted

I can't imagine the Marines are any different than the Navy. If I would have taken any of that stuff it would have been confiscated.

I would ask one of my jarhead friends but they are in Iraq.

I was allowed all of this (I didn't try the cameras) when I went in the army.

Personal grooming aids are allowed, just no electric razors.

You can most certainly have running shoes. If you do not, they take you to the PX to buy some. The armed forces hasn't run in boots for over 2 decades now.

He is not going to be able to have a MP3 player or anything else like this in boot camp.

The best thing one can do for someone in boot camp/basic is write them letters.
