My company still uses IE 6 on all workstations because they're afraid of breaking their ERP system if they upgrade.

Pfft. I have office 97.

not sure what you bitching about....IT shouldn't haven't to support multiple browsers/versions...if the company standard is IE7 and you choose not use it, I don't see why it is their problem...

there's a "true" VPN but it doesnt work because the software that authenticates my smartcard is not 64 compatible.

we have a java applet that allows this tunnelling but the applet is not compatible with 64. (not compatible with non-IE browsers either)

I'm sorry but having it compatible with 1 browser that the company officially supports is sufficient. I write & support web apps and we only care about IE even though I don't use it myself outside of work. Cross-browser compatibility with all the quirks is not high up on the list of important things to worry about if you ask anyone who has a say in IT planning (yes they're IT people too). Time is much better spent elsewhere. If you, the end-user, bring it up, you will be laughed at and/or ignored... I'm sure you can picture that.

My corporate userbase sucks.

They do not ever consult with me before making upper management decisions on purchasing, implimentation, and deployment of corporate-wide applications - and subsequently when those applications either fail to meet their intended purpose, are bloated far beyond the required scope and thus cost ridiculously more than they should, or simply come downright restrictive, I simply have to follow instructions without comment and then take the heat for any (usually) invariable problems/failures.

Compounding this issue are users who immediately assume everything I do is intended specifically to make their lives difficult, and that I never perform my due diligence ensuring application computability or following simple best practices guidelines. Never once do they stop to consider that it was simply an upper management decision passed down to me that I have no decision making in.

I.. see what you did there?
