My conversion to an Ipod.

See, I've always hated buying something that is hyped. I've never seen the Titanic, and never will. I couldn't care less about what Pulp Fiction was all about 'cause I never saw it. And when the iPod was touted as the next best thing since sliced bread, I vowed to stay away - why? Because I've been burned too many times by the hype, and been burned too many times by the early adopter idiots who call themselves Metrosexual New Yorkers.

So I purchased a Creative Nomad Zen NX. This was to me, the clear underdog. The rival that would topple the mighty White One. Two days and an exchange later, I had the Zen Xtra in my hand. The device was cool-looking enough for me, yet I immediately found the actual use of the player less than perfect. The menu system isn't bad, but the jog-dial interface is really, really, not the best. Apart from its inaccuracy, the jog-dial, after an extended scroll, would continue the scrolling even after its release. A software bug? Probably. The Nomad turned out to have alot of these.

But, I tried to make do. I had never used an iPod, and I thought that this wasn't so bad, for half the price, after all. Then came the hell. The damn thing crapped out on me. To make a long story short - I sent it in for repair, recieved a brand new one 2 weeks later, which was defective because of a charging malfunction. That was returned for another, which had an audio-jack problem (sound only in mono). That was returned for one that was dented and scratched beyond belief upon my arrival - apparently after sending two new defectives, they thought they'd try their luck with a refurbished one. Nope. I pissed down their throat, and they sent a brand new one.

So, I sold it on ebay - untested. Nothing unethical...if they have a problem, there's the oh-so-long 90 day warranty for that item that they can use. I also through in a free license to Notmad, another thing I bought, and ended up pissing down the drain.

So I buy an iPod off ebay. $379 shipped for a 30g 3G iPod. A price that I was willing to pay (NEVER would I pay the exorbitant price Apple is asking), and one that I could afford.....

And let me tell you. WOW. What follow through. What design. Apple really thought this out - but apparently felt it was worth charging an arm and a leg for. And in retrospect, I see why they can. It's miles ahead of any competitor. BUT, and I guarantee you. NOT FOR LONG. Someone, somewhere, is going to come out with something, that's "good enough" to compete, and for a better price, and will knock Apple off its pedestal. This is, of course, nothing new - simply a replay of Apple's experiences many times over.

Apple needs to realize that capturing a market share with a superior product and then leveraging that to force an exorbitant price only works until someone comes up with something "good enough". After that Apple nosedives as people start jumping to that product, recognizing the optimal cost/benefit ratio that Apple loses sight of. It's happened before, and it will happen again. If only Apple would learn...

The iPod has been tops for 3 years now. No one has been abel to compete yet and there is not change in the near future. Keep in mind that the 4th gen is coming out soon.

I'd rather have the IHP-140 or 120 because of ogg vorbis support and a digital line out.

Apple's prices are Apple's prices.

It isn't like they garnered a huge share of the mp3 player market by selling the product at a low price then, once it became popular, started gouging people for the exact same product.

I've driven a Segway, and have my entire house running wireless with a Cantenna.

The former blows, and the latter is essential.

iPod - Interface Interface Interface!

for me that alone makes it worth the dough and puts it
head and shoulders above all the players. and what's the
big deal with ogg support anyway.

i was pissed about apple not updating the older gen interface to have the playlist features, that's just $#!TTy of them, i'm hoping someone hacks the firmware,
they've gotten as far as running linux on it but haven't really gotten
the audio or buttons to work. one of the coolest suggestions was bluetooth
support so you could broadcast tunes. if they'd make some progress i'd be
all about working on those kinds of projects.

i also liked the feel of the mechanical scroll wheel on the gen 1's and i'm not too sure about the touch sensitive buttons on the Gen3's, its funny to see people bang at the buttons because they're so responsive. but i'm just jealous because i have a gen 2.

Screw color. Battery life > color. An AM tuner would be cool too but I doubt that would work good being that close to the HDD. I agree with you on the ear buds though. First thing I did with them was throw them in my drawer. Absolutely useless. I had to use them once and it took me about 10 minutes to blow out one of them. Oh, and could they make the remote clip less freaking useless this time?

not to mention the firewire drive feature is indispensible.
I bring home movies on the weekends
to watch on my xbox. Carry files back and forth between my
dorm and the library instead of ftping it and worrying about account quotas.
etc. its just damn sweet.

I personally love my Archos Jukebox multimedia. 20gb, color screen, plays jpegs and avis, digital out, etc... Wonderful device. Cost me about $280 a little over a year ago ($50 cheaper than the 10gb ipod at the time). It's a bit bigger and the battery is not as good (rated for 8 hours but I continue to get 7 on it), but other than that I love it. I have the camera attachment so I can take movies and pics, but never really used it.

I have no real complaints about the archos, I especially love recording from radio using VBR with the line-in (don't know if the ipod has that, just a fav feature). If you are too broke for the apple, check out the archos.

Holy crap those are expensive :Q They look great though. Not sure I could bring myself to spend $270-300 on earbuds.

I think they know, but are milking it as long as they can :)
