My computer wont turn off....???

Hey Guys,

Not really sure if this should be in Hardware or OS's, but I have a bit of a problem. My computer suddenly will not shut down. I click on shutdown, and it does nothing. I have to kill the power supply to turn it off. I don't believe it is a virus, because I have scanned it many times and found nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? The help is greatly apperciated. Thanks!

Sometimes there is a program the computer is trying to close. If it takes too long to respond, the computer hangs. Internet connections create that problem all the time. Especially if you have a fast system. It goes through the routines too fast for the subsystems to keep up with. I remember that Microsoft had a patch for windows that actually increased the shutdown time so that the subsystem had time to close down before the processor finished what it was doing so the system wouldn't hang.

Rather than disconnecting the power, try holding down the power button for five seconds (or so). Newer PCs will take this as an indication that you want to force the power off without waiting for a shutdown.

Well, it's fixed. It turned out to be a program running. I don't know how, but I closed the running programs in the tray, one by one, and finally it shut down. I took the program off the start up list and now it is fine. Thanks for the help guys.
