and when I rebooted, I rejected a message that didn't allow SVC....connect to the internet through the firewall. I didn't know what that was, but my desktop is no longer connecting. My wireless laptop is fine, however. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Sorry, but I do not know any other specifics.

Thanks.

open up program for firewall and fine application rules, then slick on SVC and program it to: "allow all"

How about this: If you're running Windows XP SP2, click on Start, then Control Panel. Open up Windows Firewall. Under the Exceptions tab, is SVC there but not checked? If so, check it and see if that fixes the problem. Also see if there's any other obvious application that doesn't have a check.

If this doesn't work, also in Windows Firewall, in the Exceptions tab you can click on Add Program and see if there's one on the list you can add that will solve the problem.

If that doesn't work, on the General tab, you can turn off the Windows Firewall for now and see if you can connect. If you can, then at least you'll know the problem is that Windows Firewall is blocking you connection to the net.

On a side note, Trend Micro's PC-cillin is the best AV/firewall application available, IMO.

Sounds to me like you have MicroTrend IS2006 security suite - which includes both firewall and PC-Cillin AV.

One of the best security features of MicroTrend IS2006 Firewall+AV is monitoring outbound-connections-by-apps.

It's a feature of the firewall - not the PC-Cillin anti-virus application.

When first installed, it will prompt you to either allow or block every connection attempt by an application. You must make a choice - block or allow the connection. Once a connection has been allowed, you will no longer be prompted about that connection. Once a connection attempt has been blocked, that connection will always be blocked (until/unless you change state).

It's meant to protect you from malware that gathers information about your system and sends that information to another site.

To view or edit/change what connections are allowed or blocked:
- Open Main Console.
- Click on 'Network Security'.
- Click on 'Personal Firewall'.
- Under 'Manage Profiles', click on 'Direct Connection'.
- Click on 'Edit'.
- Click on 'Exceptions'.
- Check or un-check boxes to change status.

I think IS2006 is the best of the current firewall/AV security suites.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the help...I'll use it for next time.
I just took the not-so-geeky-tech-cool-way and used system restore. All is well.

I disagree with your opinion, Kaspersky is much better than trend micro, infact even norton is better than trend micro..

Try Start>CMD>OK PING 4.2.2.2

Let me know if it says "hardware error"

Thanks

I've already recieved a few calls to tech support from customers who are receiving an error message when checking email...some TMPROXY.DLL file related to Trend Micro's software. Another system with the same symptom could no longer ping the router and the PING command reported "hardware error". I suggested that there was a problem with the Linksys LNE100TX NIC drivers.
