I dont know why I took an easy computer class. But I need the credits...anyways heres the story. About 75% of the things she says are wrong....I corrected her like 10 times today and she gave me this addititude.

"A CD-ROM Can store information"

That is incorrect! It can READ a cd but it cant store on it. You need a cd-rw. She complained for 5 minutes that she was right. Then another student also told her she was wrong. She went to go 'check' and then finally she admit I was right.

The next thing she said was that 60 hz was the best refreash rate for a monitor....This time she was trying to ignore me so I yelled out "No it's not!" Then again she checked and found out i was right and she was wrong again. Then we had another debate over how AMD is a company and the Athlon is a type of CPU made by AMD. Then she went on saying that p4's are the best and ATHLONS are slower. At this point I just tried to ignore everything she said. There is a lot of stuff she said wrong, but I don't feel like writing an essay :p What kills me is that she says wrong things and the students in her class who dont know anybetter are going to be the people annoying the crap out of Tech Support. Why Can't we get decent computer teachers! :|

<< A CD-ROM Can store information >>

Sorry, but she was right. A CD-ROM can store information... A CD-ROM Drive cannot, however.

No, she should have worded it diffrently then. IT should be A CD-ROM Can be stored information into. Its like a floppy disk. It doesnt do the writing. THe floppy drive stores in information INTO the floppy.

You should go into the teaching field and make a difference :) Better yet, volunteer to teach some kids about the "truth" of computers :) Teach them the truth son. Go for it. Otherwise, be happy you're offered a computer class, because there's no way they would be able to afford anyone with any real knowledge of computers to teach anywhere.

Oh yea, if you get a computer/IS/MIS/CS/Engineering degree, I want you to teach since you'd know more than here and be a much better teacher and also more qualified. Given your abilities and knowledge, you should be able to leverage a very high salary :)

So she might be aware that P4 2.2Ghz does exist and you believe AMD offers better performance/price ratio. So what? If you want to boast that you know more than someone older, fine. Do it here, do it everywhere. I don't care. But if you're unhappy with the level of education you're receiving, then you need to take that up with someone outside of ATOT. Talk to your teacher or something. Anyway, this will be less of a problem when you go to an engineering school.

he's right people the know computers are making money. a monkey could be trained to teach an intro class. whats also funny is i am also taking cs111. except for me its operating systems principles, and we are doing linux kernel modifications.

Well, it can be interpreted that she meant a CD-ROM stores information, the same way a book does. It doesn't write information, it stores it.

That is truly sad. Nothing like the blind leading. What I personally like is how frogdog in grade 12 is being taught Basic because "object oriented languages are too tough", which is a nice way for the teacher to say he doesn't know anything else.

You may wish to talk to the instructor after class in an informaal setting. Continuing to challenge the instructor may affect your grades.

Also, if you can demonstrate that you know the material completely, the instructor may allow you to waive the classes and go straight to the tests/finals. This may be an option to present, rather than the possibilty that you are disrupting the class by the challenges.

Her questions are misleading. She writes it the way she wants. She calls Zip Disks Floppy disks. But are they really Floppy disks since you need a ZIP Drive to read them. Its confusing because she doesnt really know what shes talking about.

I know its not about a teacher, but in my english class, one guy told me that he thought a "Athlon Thunderbird 2100 with PC800 DDR RDRAM" was the way to go. I kid you not :)

Well if shes wrong, she needs to be corrected. Just like in my other classes, if I am wrong the teacher corrects me. The students who know little about computers are being taught the wrong things and this shouldnt happen.

I think you're splitting hairs way too much. Yes, she's obviously not the most computer savvy, but a Zip disk is a type of floppy disk, I'd say. It's one of those Zip disks are floppy disks, but not all floppies are Zips kinda things.
And the thing about the CD-ROM, again. WHen you say CD-ROM, you could be referring to either the media OR the drive. IF she's referring to the media, she's right. If you're going to be nitpicky, CD-ROM can ONLY be the media, and if you're talking about the drive, you must say drive.

If you take a class for idiots, you will be taught as though you are an idiot :)

"A CD-ROM Can store information"

This is correct, a CD-ROM can and does store information.

That is the reason that she is a teacher. She couldnt get a job in the computer field.

he's right people the know computers are making money. a monkey could be trained to teach an intro class.

I greatly despise both of these remarks because I myself am a high-school level teacher teaching computer maintenance/A+. I spent nearly 8 years in the field running a sucessful computer shop and an internet service provider. Making good money but working well in excess of 80+ hours a week. I was offered a teaching job because of my experience, not because of some crap education degree. Both of the above statements are very generalized but there are some teachers out there who came from the field to education as a "break". Now I make about half what I used to but only have to work 185 days a year. I have one of the most sucessful computer maintenance programs in our district and have a 80% certification rate. True there are a lot of computer teachers out there who shouldn't really be teaching computers, but I just want to make the point that there are exceptions. It is not what I plan to do forever but it's fun seeing the students finally realize how things work and how they can fix them. I will return to the IT field here in the next few years and hopefully leave behind some well trained technicians and future AT'ers. Sorry for the rant but some things just get under my skin.

Heh you have a lot to learn. Just because you thought she was wrong (a cd-rom can store information but a cd-rom drive cannot).

But I am sure she has said some wrong things. I had one intro to computer teacher tell me a calculator is NOT a computer. After class I showed her my TI-95. Comparing that to a 8086 is a good comparison. But anyway I degrees calling a Teacher/Professor repeatedly out on silly little mistakes that have no meaning on the course will get you a bad reputation and it WILL effect your grade.

When you get into the ?real world? of work you may be tempted to try that but I guarantee you that it will work only a few times before you wonder why you get all the jobs that nobody wants and are passed over on promotions. Sometimes its better to just keep the mouth shut and continue.

Oh on the floppy disk thing I can see why she calls it that. It does look like a floppy disk.

Someone mentioned that you can test out of the class. I recommend you do that. When I took the basic computer classes I couldn?t stand it. They were way to easy so I tested out. Which was great I got to get the credit and didn?t have to go or do the silly homework?
