Alright here are my specs:

Pentium 4 3.4 ghz Prescott
Intel Desktop Board PBL915 (http://support.intel.com/suppo...top/d915pbl/index.htm)
Antec 380 watt TruePower Sonata Case (http://www.antec.com/us/produc...ails.php?ProdID=15138)
Ati Radeon X800 XT Pci-E (Bought off Ebay)
1 gb (2x512) crucial value select ram (set at timings 4-4-4-12) 533 mhz ddr2

Anywho, I decided to benchmark my system just barely. I downloaded a little demo for unreal tournament 2004, set it up with no sound at 1024x768 resolution and I get a benchmark of a wopping 44.534275 fps. Now the game runs smooth BUT half-life 2 and doom 3 dont run that smooth. The problem is I spend $500 on my video card and I'm only getting 45 fps at 1024x768. A quick search on google yields results of over 100 fps for the same game/settings/video card (http://graphics.tomshardware.c...charts-06.html)<--- quick example.

I have anisoptric filtering and bilinear w/e set to application so it's not some dumb mistake of myy own(i hope)

World of warcraft runs a little choppy with the graphics turned up all the way at 1280x1024 (frame rate dips down to 20s a lot)

i know my ram sucks but i didnt think it would be this big of a bottleneck-it does run reliably, i've run memtest for like 12 hours with no problems.

any ideas why my systems so terrible and what i could do??? thanks a lot in response

dunno sounds like some driver conflict...what i would do is double check all the newest drivers are installed and if that doesn't fix it reload your computer from scractch

Maybe mobo drivers or bios. Make sure they are up to date, an out of date mobo driver can really hit you.

Remember the DDR2 has high latencies. The new OCZ EL is the only DDR2 worth buying with performance gains huge over the old stuff.

Also drivers could be a problem.

Make sure to install your chipset drivers as well.

if you can provide us with a link to your winning x800xt Ebay auction, we will have a more in deep info on your videocard.

Here's the link to the card i purchased: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...sPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

i believe i downloaded the latest card drivers when i installed xp (and also the chipset drivers) but I'll have to make sure when I get home(I'm at work right now)

I know my mobo bios is up to date, but I haven't downloaded the latest drivers for winxp.

Thanks for all the info, I'll give some feedback about how those tips work out when I get home.

MOTHERBOARD CHIPSET DRIVERS (not bios) .....make sure u are upto date.

my friend never even knew about these and had the ones windows uses as default....dang his rig was slow, till i told him to download nforce3 driver

Yeah, make sure you installed your motherboard/chipset drivers, otherwise you may be running your video card at pci speeds.

I'm a little bummed. I just installed the newest chipset drivers and Ati drivers and I'm only getting 44.741080 fps on Unreal 2004. Tomorrow I'll try reinstalling XP and starting from the ground up. Thanks for the help,

Jason

Are you using UMark to get these benches? If so, most benchmarks you see in reviews are done in flyby mode, which eliminates the bots, and gives you a "true" frame rate without any cpu usage going towards bot control. Your frame rates will literally plummet if you run UMark with a bunch of bots. Just a thought...

I would suspect either:

a.) drivers (meaning reinstall your video drivers. Make sure to COMPLETELY uninstall all old drivers using the program Driver Cleaner - I think version 3.3 is the latest)

b.) the CPU throttling. The CPU may be running hot and throttling. Check the temperatures (in the BIOS and in windows) and make sure your CPU's heatsink is installed properly and making good contact.

You know, I was using a batch file to run the benchmark. I had it set up to run some recorded game file that I downloaded. Anywho, I just ran UMark with 0 bots at 1024x768 and got 184.8418 and at 1280x1024 with 6 bots I got 107 fps. I guess I was just being an idiot and comparing non-comparable benchmark scores. Haha, thanks a lot. I guess I'll have to benchmark Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 and see what I get in those games with a real benchmark utility.

glad to hear it got straightened out. If I paid that much for a video card and got nothing less than utter amazement from it, I would seriously pitch a fit.
