My computer powers on for under a second and goes into a reboot loop.

I've had this computer for over a year and it's worked wonderfully until today when a blow dryer was running in conjuction with my air conditioners and created a power outage my room.

I'll post my specs just in case it'd help:

After fixing the power to my room, my computer now powers on for less than a second and then shuts off every few seconds and then keeps doing it until I power off the PSU/power cord. There's no beeps or anything aside from the standard startup sound and the fan powering on.

I don't know what to do from here. I have a spare PSU but it's lacking a bit of details (Wattage, mainly) so I'm afraid to use it in case it can cause further damage.

Does this situation immediately point out the offender in my computer? What troubleshooting should I do from this point?

Do this quick BIOS default test first:


  • Shutdown, unplug power supply from wall outlet, press power button for 10 seconds.

  • Open case and locate CMOS reset jumper on mobo. (usually near the CMOS battery).

  • Move jumper from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 for 60 seconds(you could also just remove the CMOS battery for 60 seconds).

  • Move jumper back to pins 1-2, or reinstall CMOS battery.

  • Plug power supply back in, then reboot.

  • If it posts, you'll need to go back into BIOS and reset your preferences.

Have you tried moving the computer to another room/power outlet? If the issue is still happening at least it rules out the external power source
