My computer makes warp core sounds now

It makes that pulsing sound like those warp cores on star trek. I can actually feel some vibration in my desk. Started happening after I added that RAID. Too many hard drives, there are now four physical hard disks in my system. Must be some sort of weird resonance happening to the case of the computer.

LOL!

Man that must be one heck of a noise! Kinda cool if you ask me. Mind doing a wav file of it and posting it?

I'd say its definitely something resonating. You may want to use some rubber bushings on the HDs. I'm not sure what else would help. BTW, if you can tell us what HDs you have and what case?

mp3 of sound

Had to remove the hissing and it's not as loud as the recording, but yeah that's more or less what it sounds like.

I have a 20 gig 7200 rpm maxtor, 45 gig 5400 rpm WD and 2 15 gig 5400 rpm maxtors in a raid 0.

But yeah, I feel like I'm on the set of a star trek engineering room or something ;)

seriously, who many disks you are using for your RAID set up, I have never met anybody with more than 2!

That sounded pretty cool. But I guess its kinda disturbing too. I guess from your info the 2 15GBs are in raid 0 config or do/can you have 4

? Sorry dude. Don't know what to tell you about that sound. Try to isolate. Start with one drive (if possible). Then the next, etc. I still suspect that the sound is just from the vibrations of everything.

You wouldn't happen to be using a volcano2 with stock fan would you? Hehehe, that might be the problem. The stock fans have tendency to vibrate the entire case. I had it on my GFs and i just swapped fans.

Do you have other fans on it? Thsoe might be the cause as well. Try lubing all of your fans and see if that helps. I can't imagine HDs causing that much noise. It kind of sounds like a couple of 120mm Sunon or Pabst fans. So maybe try diabling the fans and start them up one at a time.

BTW Thanks for that sound clip.

ever since i switched to AMD and RAID format HDD's my comps temp has gone up like 10 degrees! :Q
Thankfully i don't have a warp core... (LOL) but i do have a sauna inside my mini-comp station desk. (This is true especially when you place your hand back behind the keyboard rack to feel the hot air floating upwards.

Now you have. I have 4 75 GB IBM 75 GXP HDDs in RAID-0 on my homebuilt system.

No. I'll tell you why. Ask yourself what the failure rate is of one hard drive. 1 in a hundred thousand? 1 in a million? Then you just multiply that by 4. So 4 in a hundred thousand? 4 in a million?

Besides, I back up everything, so a failure simply means the slight inconvenience of buying a new drive, and reloading my OS and programs which are backed up on CD anyhow.

I play with video quite a bit, and this setup SCREAMS. I'll take my chances :D

No point in trying to explain it... most people don't believe or understand probability. I know i've tried to explain it, but if somebody on the internet says the life of your system is cut by half because there are 2, then it must be true.

Actually only two drives in my raid. Just wanted to see for myself the fuss ;)

The noise is starting to grow on me though :D

Put a copyright on that sound and sell it to Valve. I'm sure they could use it in HL2.

Are your hard drives fitted with subwoofers?
