My computer makes no sense :(

My desktop was solid as a rock two weeks ago.

Then I left to go visit the parents, and the desktop got shut down and was left untouched for two weeks.

I come back, I boot it up, and it hard locks a few times while running Windows. After the third reset I don't get a display after the Windows loading window. Restart, shut down/turn on a few times, still no display.

Leave the computer off for a couple of hours while I watch a DVD on the lappy.

Turn the computer back on, and now it's back to being solid as a rock.

FuzzyB, check you pockets when it is working. I know that I have the lucky pig* in mine. It is the source of all things that did not work that will suddenly heal themselves and work perfectly from that point on.

* - The lucky pig. Near Elgin Scotland is Castle Cawdor. This castle is supposed to be the MacBeth castle. In the gift shop, there is a little basket of brass pigs labelled as "Lucky Pig" and last time I was there, they were 95p. I bought 1 somewhere around 1993. Well, as the OS/hardware engineer, I got called over to "look at this problem" alot. It would always start functioning when I got there and never break again. Must be the lucky pig. Makes it real hard to troubleshoot problems when the heal themselves (had to start leaving the pig out of the diagnostics area.) The legend grew. Next time I went to Scotland, I had to bring 20 back for all those folks I know.

But, do not buy a Lucky Pig for such purposes as gambling. Lucky Pigs make things work the way they are supposed to work. Remember that slot machines and casino games are supposed to make money for the casino, not for you. Lucky Pigs make you lose money faster at a slot machine.

Well, my computer started to hard lock again, and this time it wouldn't boot. Instead, it would sit there and emit a continuous unending error beep.

Looked it up, one sources says it's the PSU and other says it's the RAM.

I changed my two RAM sticks from DIMM 1+3 to DIMM 2+4, and it now boots up fine and has been solid for two days straight.

I just, *shakes head*

I think I'm going to try avoiding turning off the computer. Once it's up and running it's fine; it just requires a few tries to get running
