My computer made a loud popping noise while it was idle

now i can't seem to turn it on. I'm assuming its my power supply. Is there a way i can test it without having another one to alternate in to check if in fact its my power supply?

Any ideas what else i might be able to do to troubleshoot this? thanks

thanks,

i seem to be getting power then. My mobo is lit. Thing is when i try turning it on my fans faintly spin then nothing.

any idea what i should try next?

The mobo getting power could be anything. I would first check for blown caps, on the mobo and the psu. The rail powering the LED could be good but another rail might have bitten the dust. Did you smell anything hot or burning after the sound?

The only way to troubleshoot a power supply is either get a ATX psu tester or try another power supply. Taking the bad unit to another machine might fry that machine too so it's not advised. I would find a power supply laying around or try to barrow one. Depending on the brand and age, it might not be a bad idea to upgrade.

The only thing in your pc that could make a 'loud pop' would be your power supply. You have a pretty good chance it's only your power supply that had a melt-down, but i have seen where a motherboard or hard drive gets fried as well as they are usually the most sensitive to large voltage fluctuations.

Hopefully you're in the majority and it's just a bad PS!!
