My computer lost it yesterday and I'm wondering what happened

Hi all,

Thought you guys might give me some ideas.

My daughter was checking her hotmail account yesterday and she said my
P4 just locked up on her. It's not locked up on me for a very
very long time. I'm guessing she turned the power off and from then on
as the system posted and just before the "starting Windows XP" logo
would come up it would reboot and was in a endless loop doing that.

I had an extra hard drive in the system with a ghost image on it and
since I had wanted to increase my drive size I took the original 60gb
that wouldn't boot and put a 120gb in it's place and restored the ghost
image to the 120gb. Everything went fine with the restore and I hooked
up the original 60gb drive and was going to move some of the files over
to my new 120gb drive and it would give me a message like "drive is not
formatted....do you want to format the drive now?" To which I said no
and used a Windows 98SE boot floppy to boot to and I could see
the files on the old drive fine with it and just used some DOS commands
to move the files from the old drive to the newer drive.

I guess my question is what happened to the hard drive so that it wouldn't
allow me to use it under Windows XP but it would still let me access it with
a boot disk using DOS commands? Could she have gotten some kind of
virus or something that fooled with the drive and caused it to not be bootable
any more?

Thanks for any and all help.

Jim
