My computer keeps restarting abruptly?

My computer restarts ramdomly, and abruptly, causing the OS to run a chkdsk every time it restarts. It first started when I was running Windows 2000 Professional. I reformatted the HDD, and reinstalled Win 2k Pro, but got the same result. So, I thought upgrading to Windows XP would do the trick, but unfortunately it didn't.

I'm pretty sure that it's a hardware problem, but aren't sure which hardware component yet. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Should I buy a new HDD? Or is it my motherboard? (By the way, the fan on my motherboard, cooling the VIA chip, is starting to hit something and make sounds every now and then. In order to fix it, I'd have to go in there and hit the fan.)

Use a program like MBM to monitor your temps and see if your reseting due to heat buildup from your fan on your heatsink slowing and being less efficient at cooling. If it was me I would replace that fan before it stops one time when your out of the room or in your room with loud game or music and then it cooks your chip.
