I started having this problem last night and it is extremely annoying since I am a Computer Science major and will need my computer back up and working in another 2 weeks!

I have a AMD 2000xp (.18mu series), KT7 ULTRA, 512 DDR, GeForce ti 4400, Audigy Soundcard

I have had my computer for two years and havnt had this problem till now. Sometimes my computer would overheat and shut off, but that was only on very hot days due to the AMD chip being so hot.

My system gets a BSOD when it crashes, and it is a 7F error. I also reformated two times, and each time it seems for fix the problem for a little while and then the isssue happens again. I have fully updated Windows and only installed the nvidia and audigy drivers (both from the retailers website).

Aside from crashs, my computer will get like 7 FPS in counter strike, when I normally used to get over 100 FPS.

Please help me out, I will give you more information if you need it. Thank you.

try running chkdsk /r from the repair recovery console, my sister in law's boyfriend's computer was doing exactly that, and finally he was getting blue screens as well, i ran that and it seemed to clear it up completely, that was WELL over a month ago, i asked him today if it was still running ok, he said it was running fine

OK, i just tried what you told me to do. Unfortunately it hasnt fixed the problem. Thank you for the input though! Oh, I should probably mention I have a 120 gig HD with two partitions, I dont know if I should have done something different in that scenario.

Well, I have had the computer for two years... do the capacitors just go back all of a sudden? Also, how would i diagnose if I have bad caps or not?

I feel something got TOO hot that day, and is now forever damaged. I dont however know how to diagnoise what exactly is broke. Worst comes to worst, I would need to change each individual part until the computer starts to work... and that is something I really really wish to stay away from doing for obvious reasons.

OK, now I am 70 percent sure it is my CPU because when i CTRL ALT DELETE, it shows that my CPU usage is at 100% I am only running a few things in teh backround and simply posting on this forum.
However, it still does not make sense that the computer will run fine for an hour or two after reformating...

Alrite, looks like I fixed my issue. I thought to myself... hey, if my computer has 100% usage, maybe its something wierd running in the backround.... WELL, I check and it was something called CTHELP.EXE... whatever that is. I think its some kind of virus that might be on my other HD that kept jumping onto the C drive from time to time. Wierd tho, cause norton didnt pick up on it :/

I suggest finding the CTHELP.EXE file and right-clicking on it and pulling up the properties to see who made it. Just guessing, but Creative Labs / Creative Technologies is one possibility - is your sound card made by them? Is the problem fixed by uninstalling the sound card drivers?

Norton's won't find stealthed driver files that are malware/viruses/rogue device drivers.

The fact that your system is unstable when your CPU is at 100% isn't good...that shouldn't be any problem at all. I'd look into figuring out why that is the case.
