I am having this issue where my computer just gets horribly slow after it's been on all day. Like if I turn it on in the morning, by 10-11 at night I'm finding scrolling over and clicking buttons, launching applications, and surfing the internet painfully difficult. I feel like by night my computer does a cinderella transformation and *poof*, I'm back to a 1997 windows 95 dell machine. At first I thought it was just my video card, because I found out that I was running it for a good week with a dead fan. I got an arctic cooler and it seems to work much better, but I still have this problem. Maybe 512MB of ram is too little? I find myself using around 80MB of ram just with firefox. Maybe my motherboard is too slow?

Sounds more like a software issue than a harwdware issue. Maybe check for adware/spyware or viruses? Sounds like something is eating up your system resources.

Do you have a good video card that you can swap in. I'm thinking the video card might have been damaged when it was running without the fan.

Also check windows device manager to make sure all of your hardware is working properly. If any device has a yellow exclamation point or red X by it then its not working

Ran ad-aware...found nothing.

all devices seem to be working.

I don't have a spare video card...

I think you might be right aobut it being a software thing, as my hardware shouldn't limit this system. It actually seems to get worse when I run a java applet (yahoo's stattracker). Do you think java could be eating up resources?

Hit ctrl-alt-del. Go to task manager if there are unwanted programs running like java applets etc, close them. Also, download Startup Control Panel, check which programs are running on bootup, disable the ones that are useless. Aside from ad aware try running hijack this and see if there are registry entries made by apyware etc. Careful with Hijack this, don't use it if you dont know how to use it.

oh yeah, try cleaning up your drive at least once every two weeks to get rid of the temp files and such, then do a defrag.

Every time you go on the internet, your computer says a pic of everything you view. Also, your registry gets clogged with a lot of un-needed stuff.

for a start, if you are using IE, go to tools... internet options... Temp Internet Files... delete cookies... delete temp files.

Then find a good registry cleaner. When I searched "registry cleaner", google gave me a bunch. Find one that you are comfortable with. Make sure you do a backup first , then clean the registry.

It is important that you run a scandisk and defrag, too.

🙂
