My Computer ATE my CD drive!

Well no not really, but I reformatted my HD without moving any devices around. After it was formatted, BIOS won't recognize my CD drive. It should be plug n play, but I've tried "detecting new hardware" and also setting drives to "auto" in BIOS. What else should I do? Do I HAVE to open up the computer again?

Please help!

when's the last time you had to open your computer?

sounds like it could be a loose cable or the wrong jumper somehow

i'd say open it up and check it out
 
Well Sohcrates, I just installed all my parts onto a new motherboard. After the installation, 98 wasn't installing properly so I reformatted. After the reformat, it didn't detect my secodary slave. If I were to open it up, what would I do? Just unplug it and plug it in again?

I am ABSOLUTELY positive. They were both working, detected in CMOS and I also saw it in the Device Manager. After I reformatted, CMOS doesn't detect it, so I put it to "auto" and still nothing.

Any suggestions would help! 🙂
 
Uh, make sure that you've got your master/slave jumpers set correctly, but if you do, and everything is plugged in, and you still can't get BIOS to see it, it's very likely a bad drive.

yep, just plugging and unplugging can do wonders

how did you install 98 if you didn't have a working cd drive?

I also have a CD-RW drive. At first, BIOS detected both drives, but after reformat, it only detected the CD-RW. I'm certain the drive isn't bad. I'm not sure how, but you just kinda' know. Any other ideas?

i think you really need to pop that sucker open and check the cables. try disconnecting both cd roms, and booting up. then try booting with just the cd rom (not the cd-rw) and then try again with both
 
My CD-RW is on Secondary Master
my CD-ROM is on Secondary Slave

Both jumper caps are on "cable select"

The problem is though, that it was working totally fine before the reformat. What could explain that? 😕
 
No...if your BIOS can't see it, Windows sure won't be able to. Try setting the drives to master and slave with the jumpers, rather than cable select.
