Orlando isn't half bad, as long as you stay in Orlando/Sanford/Deltona. Avoid Lakeland unless you have the desire to live in West Virginia. There's plenty to do in Orlando, there's an active night life (
especially if you hit up OBT

). Just about every restraunt you can imagine out there - it is a tourist trap. You also have Disney, Universal and Seaworld among other things. Plenty of beaches within ~45 minutes on the ocean side, better beaches are 2 hours away on the gulf side. Daytona is overrated though - there's other beach areas which are better. If you like camping and shit, you can head up to the Ocala National Forest which is ~1 hour away.
As far as living goes, it's slightly more expensive, but living north or east of Orlando is generally a better idea. Lakeland is west, and Kissimmee/St. Cloud are south, but you have to deal with rednecks in Lakeland and tourists galore in Kissimmee/St. Cloud. Plus the traffic is worse from that direction. From the north side you get (in order of proximity from Orlando, consequently cost too - about 20 miles total range) Winter Park, Altamonte Springs, Winter Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary, Sanford, Oveido, and then DeBary/Deltona. There's a few other areas, Apopka is kind of a dump in the making though. And avoid Pine Hills (downtown-ish), there's a reason its nickname is Crime Hills.
Personally, I found most of the people that I ran into very nice and hospitable. There are some run down areas, particularly in Sanford, Apopka and Deltona. You couldn't pay me to live IN Orlando though. There's a good deal to do in or around the area. Longwood and Lake Mary are the "nice" areas, but also pricey.
Be forewarned - during the summer you're looking at temps in the upper 80's with humidity of 90%+ by 7am. Also during the summer you will get a nasty thunderstorm every day between noon and 3pm. Everyone uses "reclaimed water" to water their lawns, and it smells like ass. I-4 is hell during rush hour no matter what, and better yet is they're almost always perpetually doing construction
somewhere on it. You will have lizards/palmetto bugs in your house no matter what. And there's sand... everywhere.
Other than that, it's not terribad. Orlando is kind of more of a "melting pot" of cultures. I lived there for almost 5 years, and in retrospect would probably have been better off not moving back to NY, but I'm in a much better place now anyway so it all worked out.
