My Company Just Took Away AIM

Doh...

My workday was slow enough as it was. We got a memo a few days ago warning us of this and today I came in and AIM is nowhere to be found on my computer 🙁 I figured they'd just block the connection... I only have 15 days left on this co-op after today, but it looks like those will be ATOT filled as I now have to find new entertainment 😛

Just some public whining to get the day off right 😛

There is no reason AIM should be installed on any work machine. Anytime i see a sharing/IM program running, i delete it and block that port. You are being paid to work, not to gossip.

Saying that, i have no problem being on ATOT 😛

You have to realize that there are some jobs out there where the work doesn't come in a steady stream. For example, I sat in my office for two straight days this week (Wednesday-Thursday) with literally no work to do. What's the harm in using an IM program when you have literally nothing to do?

I use AIM at work to talk to other people in my office, and to other coworkers in different parts of the building. It's a lot better than phone or e-mail.

Guess that depends 🙂 I'm actually looking to install here in my office so that we can communicate better(and cheaper) with employees at remote locations in other states. My managers also use it to get ahold of me when I'm at home because it's easier to track me down and communicate with that than it is to call me on the phone 🙂

I agree that there is very little use for AIM around our company, although there is one area that requires constant communication and a few of the guys use it. But there is no reason that I need it for work, you're right, I'm just missing something that I've had for a while. Thank God for ATOT.

Is your office hireing? 🙂

I've weighed this before. Where I work, we blocked chat programs b/c the installation of them sometimes screws up legit business programs and also because some of them present security holes.
Blocking them to avoid people wasting time is an excercise in pissing into the wind. If people want to slack, they'll find a way to slack. If they don't gossip on IM, they'll stand around the water cooler and do it.

In short, if someone isn't getting their work done b/c they are IM junkies, it's a management issue, not an IT issue 🙂

<< Have you try umm.. the AIM express?? no download hehe 🙂 >>

Actually, it has been verified that AIM Express will work, however as I said I only have 15 days left on this co-op after this week. I don't want to tempt fate... and I'm a big pu$$y 😛😛

at least you HAD AIM.... you should be able to use AIM express.... the co-op job that i'm currently at they run a proxy server so no chat programs for me at all :| and what really sucks... they wont' give the proxy info..... I at least had to try 😀

Exactly! If some guy is fuxoring around on the internet all day looking up sports scores and doing god knows what, and the manager knows about the employee doing that, it isn't my job as the IT guy to tell him to knock it the hell off and get to work. It's the managers job to tell that schmuck that there's a job to do, and if he would enjoy keeping it, he'd actually start doing it.

Having me come in and secretly locking down internet access(Which I've been asked to do) is just a supervisors way of avoiding confrontation and not doing HIS job.

Surprisingly, it is! There actually is a lot of work that needs to be done. Unfortunately I do not have the skills to do it (I've only been here 3 months), so it's up to the managers here to get the work to me and understand what it is that I need to do. The managers are definitely the bottleneck.

The fact that there's actually a lot of work to do gives me job security even if I'm not doing anything, which is nice. So if anyone's interested in working here with me, let me know and I'll give your name to the managers. 🙂

It sounds nice, but in practice, it isn't.

Well, it is better than being swamped with icky work that is not motivating.

I agree 100%... you think your dream job is a place where you can just surf the net all day? I've been doing that for 5 months now. Well, the first 2 were spent begging for work because I was actually motivated and was very gung-ho about being here on my first co-op. Now I'm just bored all the time. I believe I'm going to have to work 20x as hard when I get back to hard work in classes next month because the lack of work here has really taken the wind out of my sails, so to speak.

I have a hard time believing that it's like this at many companies, but from reading a few replies it doesn't seem so uncommon. This is a huge, worldwide company I'm at, I think for my next co-op I'll go somewhere smaller so I'll actually be given some work and a chance to learn.

I'd have no problem wiith workers surfing AT but, aim and all other messenger programs would be history on any network I had admin responsibility for.

I'm glad you're not responsible for my network then. 😉 I use trillian to keep in touch with my friends. I'm another one of those people who does not have steady work. I'm also a week ahead of schedule, so I can afford to goof off. 🙂

Lol, but who knows what the future might hold eh ? you could end up with the blonde, smiling admin from hell who tells you "Trillian this nef" 😀

Well, based on this field test, I have to say that there are always alternate, just as unproductive ways to spend your time. The only thing I'm missing is the random conversation with the friends and girlfriend between classes.

Still no work thrown my way. 🙁

True, but in a small software company, almost all the value rests on the software engineers...I happen to be the best they've got. 😉
What sort of workaround would be agreeable? 🙂
