My college is threatening to sue faculty and students...

Santa Rosa Junior College is threatening to sue several hundred students and faculty members who have created private e-mail addresses that use the college?s name without permission.

The college is attempting to stamp out Yahoo, Google and other e-mail accounts that include the letters ?SRJC? or the words ?Santa Rosa Junior College? in the user?s name, such as JohnDoe_SRJC@yahoo.com.

😕

...on a side note, I recently ran for V.P. of one of our campuses and own a domain with SRJC and my name. I put the site up in a hurry so don't expect much out of it, the night before the election in fact.

Anyways, I now own SRJCdavid.com and am curious what they have in store for me. (BTW, my campaign poster with the URL was approved by the staff.)

P.S. Please don't rip on the site, I know its crap, but it was seriously rushed. I am only showing it as an example of how dumb this policy is.

I own aggieprofs.com (like pick-a-prof). How long until Texas A&M, Utah State, UC Davis, New Mexico State, or one of the other Aggie schools come after me?

Nothing wrong with your site

Actually, it could possibly be a violation of a trademark.

For example, Texas A&M University owns TAMU, Aggie, etc trademarks in Texas. They could possibly sue me for my possession of aggieprofs.com.

If Microsoft can steal mikerowesoft.com, anything is possible.

Someone should register SRJCMonster.com, and let Monster Cable sue SRJC.

Awesome idea

For using the school's abbreviation in the domain or email addy, I wouldn't think it would be possible for for them to have legal action. I think if you use copyrighted names; e.g. Bevo from Texas, or Reveille from A&M or even possibly the use of the word "Aggie" could be a violations. Again to use a commonly accepted abbreviation seems a bit ridiculous for them to get upset. Now if you were to slander the school, though, I do wonder if they could set you up for libel, but you are obviously not doing that.

Are you unfamiliar with Monster Cable's rampage of lawsuits against anything that dares associate itself with the word "Monster"?

Way to use the term "spring chicken" on your campaign materials. All you need to do is tell the student body to get off your lawn. 🙂

Krylon posted the same one-emoticon answer to my thread.

Neffery abounds...

What you have to love is they are suing teachers and students.

NARF!

Also...gotta love how they have been scouring everyones email...no privacy there.

Makes you NEED to have a private email.
