My college IS&T department is so cool

A couple weeks ago the school server my programming teacher maintains started being attacked by some computer in Asia. His response was to use all the computers in the lab to launch a DDOS attack against the offending computer.

The best part is, the dean told him good job. 😀

Of course the computer in Asia could've just been a victim of a hacker who used it against your school.

I think your professor excersized very poor judgement.

1. he gives his students the impression that ddos attacks are ok if you can justify it to yourself
2. the attacker now has the addresses of enough machines to launch his own attack PLUS the machines are on a network that you know he can gain access to.
3. Your professor does not know what service or machine he took down and by taking said machine down, he makes the task of finding how the attacker infiltrated the network more difficult.
4. Your class may have taken down a completely innocent machine. Things as simple as uncontrolled ping requests have been mistaken for attacks before. If this were the case, it would have been you guys who been in the wrong.

Overall, I'd say he should have acted a little more responsibly.

i call BS. how did he find the IP of the attacker? if the server got smurfed, there should have been ICMP packets from tons of computers and none from the attacker's computer. there's really no point in doing a DOS attack with a single computer... and there's also no point in doing a DOS attack from a single computer lab... all the packets are coming out of the same pipe, so might as well just do it with one. i doubt the pipe to the internet is faster than 100mbit
