An Apple Valley woman and her boyfriend have been charged in a child abuse case in which one of her young daughters suffered brain trauma and paralysis on the left side of her body.

Roff told hospital staff and later investigators that she believed the girl had run into a desk two days before while in Lewis' care and may have hit her head on the nightstand while falling out of bed.

Lewis told investigators a similar story, but said the girl's injuries happened on June 17 and 18. He said the girl was groggy and unconscious for a short time after the fall and that she vomited.

Roff later admitted she lied about when the 2-year-old was injured because she was worried about what child protection officials and police would think about the injury, the complaint said.

Roff maintained that girl had run into a desk and fell out of bed multiple times.

The 2-year-old girl remained in the hospital until mid-August, Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said. Her leg movement has improved and she is now able to walk, he said.

"She still seems to have partial paralysis in her left arm, and she's receiving therapy in connection with her injuries," Backstrom said.

Both children are now in foster care, he said.

Sounds like she is helping her boyfriend abuse her two girls.

She was in my department but is now in another department. This is Minnesota, so I assume even though everyone knows about it no one will say anything.

BTW, my wife is upset that i posted this story on facebook. She is not my friend but i have lots of work friends on facebook. My feeling is if you do not want me to post it, don't do sick things like hurt children.

I'm with you. That's journalism, and news. I'd be with your wife if the woman got busted for smoking weed or something, but fuck her for beating her kids.

Well there is always the innocent until proven guilty thing.... but then again jerry sandusky got away with his shit for so long because people kept quite about it.

If these were just allegations I'd side with your wife, but she admitted to lying to cover up for the injuries, so I side with you, op.

If you hurt children, especially your own, you had better expect some backlash. A lot of it.

While I find the idea of hurting children terrible, I wouldn't have posted anything on a social networking site...MYOB

Yeah. I don't even like children and stories like this make my blood boil. We ought to add forcible sterilization to the penalties we impose upon people who abuse their kids or those who cover for their scumbag boyfriends.

Ugh - that is a sad story. Jim Backstrom is a total hardass and will prosecute the hell out of both of them, for whatever that's worth. In some instances I think he is unreasonable, but in this case I think an aggressive approach makes perfectly good sense.

Several years ago I worked a case as a Military Policeman in which a two year old child "fell down the stairs" and was unconscious when the paramedics and police showed up.

I had just come on shift as the patrol supervisor and met the distraught family at the emergency room and watched as the medical staff worked feverishly to stabilize the child for life flight to the nearest children's hospital. The child flatlined twice as I watched and I found out later was revived no less than five times after paramedics arrived and transported. I watched as the life flight helicopter landed and the child was transported away.

That night I had hugged the distraught mother, I arranged a highway patrol escort to get them to the children's trauma center that was 100 miles away, I even put $25 in gas in their car because they said they were broke and had no money to do so.

The child didn't make it through the next day and died. Several days later the child's step father admitted to CID that he kicked the child down the stairs in anger.

I am still haunted by the sight and sound of a life flight chopper and I am haunted by the fact that I can't beat that step father within an inch of his life for destroying that family and killing that child. This situation is no different and hurting children has left an indelible scar on me for the rest of my life. Fuck these people, they deserve no mercy.
