i agree with this as the first step / subtle approach... it's the nicest way possible... and he should realize if you do it often enough. If after a while he still doesn't get it, then you can just tell him straight out. Someone has to... for his own good.

I'd rather just be told.

I have been told once or twice in my life. "Dude, your breath stinks, go brush your teeth or something."

Assuming it's a guy, he'd rather just be told outright.

Yeah, just tell the guy he's got bad breath and then offer him a mint or something.

So, on the paranoid side, if someone offers YOU (anyone) a mint, do you automatically assume you have bad breath or they are just being nice. And do you ever decline the mint?

just tell him. straight up.

yip. my former classmate had horrible breath, i could smell it standing 4 feet from her and that is the truth. since she was going to be a massage therapist soon i pulled her to the side one day during a class break and told her straight up.

it went something like this

Jill: i have been meaning to talk to you about this for a while, i want you to know that i do not want to offend you but i think you should know your breath is really bad.

she was very receptive and glad that i told her. she later told me that if i smell it to tell her immediatly so she can take care of it.

personally i think she should see a dentist for chronic bad breath.

as has been said, polite honesty is probably the best approach. however, before letting him know that his breath bothers you, offer him a mint, gum, breathstrip or etc. if that works, you should be good to go (for today at least).

We don't argue fact around here pal.

My wife is in the other room asking "what's so funny"
"oh nothing"
