My city settles lawsuit with some suicidal idiot...

Some time ago some idiot decided he wanted to commit suicide by jumping off the I-70 overpass here in town. Police had to stop traffic for hours while they tried to talk the guy down. He could have killed someone by jumping off so they'd waited long enough and tasered the guy, but he fell the wrong way onto the highway below. He filed suit against the city and they settled for $300,000.

Frankly, I'm pissed that the city settled with this guy. He should have just jumped when they had the traffic stopped and saved us a whole lot of money and care.

There's actually a movement going on in town to see if they can file a class action suit against this guy to recoup the funds and use it for things the city actually NEEDS.

Suicide laws should be reversed. It should be an honorable thing to do. Too many people on this planet as it is. Can't take life? Too hard for you? Feel like you won't amount to anything? Yeah...you probably won't. I'd rather you not suck up my social security money, just go ahead and jump.

We sure as hell can't bring unwanted pregnancies to come to a full stop...but we could at least let suicidal people go about their business. Something has got to curb this population growth.

It's this same bullshit that leads to people spending a cool half million dollars in a guaranteed to fail attempt to save their ailing grandmother who is going to die anyways because the cancer has metastasized all over her body.. You think these people are worth anything, how about YOU spend the money to save them. Anyways not everyone who wants to kill themselves are mentally ill, some actually have good reason, like because they know they're going to jail for life..

This is also another example of a stupid lawsuit. He was about to do the very act that happened to him, but yet he can sue just because someone else intervened. That's not cool at all. The whole lawsuit system needs work, big time.

Because if their standing over a highway or some crap like that, wait till they jump, land on a car and cause some severe accident. If you're going to commit suicide, don't go doing it where you'll physically endanger other people.

You've never been around someone that actually tries to kill themselves have you? Trust me, once you've been in situations like that, you will understand why you don't just let them kill themselves. If nothing else have some respect for the police/people who have to deal with it. You think they want it on their conscience that they possibly could have saved someone, but didn't? What about their families? Are you going to be the one to tell their wife/husband/son/daughter/parents that they were a nuisance so you felt it better they just killed themselves?

And fleabag, if there's a "good reason" (whatever the fuck that means, like going to jail because you fucked up is any more valid than your wife/kid/etc having died or being mentally ill), why should we let them take the easy way out? Pay for your mistakes.

All the tough people who say just let them kill themselves are really shortsighted. There's plenty of cases of people who tried to, but someone saved them and it ended up being the best thing in their life. Sure there's plenty that go back and finish what they couldn't before, but giving up on them is ridiculous.

There was a jumper on one of the main bridges here last year. This bridge is 3 lanes in each direction and carries a ton of traffic all day long. Some guy decided to kill himself, but after about 6 hour standing there, he came down.

The worst part is that the police shut down the entire bridge for the whole 6 hours. Being part of a freeway with limited ways off, people were stuck in their cars for the entire time, and several people ran out of gas while idling. Other still abandoned their cars and walked.
