I am typing this in the comforts of my bed. No wires to hamper me. I love it!

Anyone else have wireless networks at home? Brand? Good bad experiences? Security issues?

How much is yours, both the base station and the PC card?

Where did you buy it from?

What kind of speed are you getting?

What's your distance?

I work for Cisco so I got a pretty decent discount. I have the 340 wireless base and pc card. :)

My cable is limiting me to around 1mbit so I am getting full net bandwidth. I haven't done any file transfers yet but ... i doub't i will ever do any large transfers over my wireless network.

I can go pretty much around the house and get 1mbit d/l.

I have the Cisco gear as well and am able to xfer data from the house next door. ~1/4 arce lots size.

I am researching outdoor directional antennas to see how far I can bridge base stations and whether
802.11b will work in the rain ;-)

Does your router have the ability to connect to external antennae? What's the guestimated street price of your router and Nic?

My wireless router - D-Link DI-711

Both of my laptops have a D-LINK DWL-650 WIRELESS PCMCIA card in them.

My server is connected normally using normal network cables, but my 2nd rig has a D-LINK DWL-500 WIRELESS PCI CARD in it.

Total cost be about 480$, expensive, but worth it, especially because now i can make bathroom trips without having to stop and postin' on AT!!!

Edit: BTW - My system pulls up to 400 feet. I tested it at our local pool, which was 300 feet away, across my house.
Max speed at that distance was 187KBS.

Here is my thread about my great Netgear wireless network.

Here is my thread asking about a recommended all-in-one DSL compatible Ethernet/wireless combo router for my sister.

Sure - here is the Cisco external antenna data sheet.
"Cisco Aironet access point antennas are compatible with all Cisco RP-TNC-equipped access points"

Price for a dual antenna access point is under a grand. PC card is around US$160. this is 128WEP

In lieuof the access point, I guess you could get the PCI card for ~US$260, equipped with a RP-TNC antenna, and configure a server as the gateway. It could also be configured with an external antenna if you were so inclined.

I was thinking about buying an antennae but do I really need to go to the grocery store with my laptop?

I was looking at the 5 mile radius antennae....what was I thinking?
