I'm newly registered (Though I've been reading for a while) so hi,

Now, I'm in the process of buying parts for acomputer I'm building. Basically I'm going for pretty much the best computer my money can buy. Here are the parts:

Processor : 939 FX-53
Motherboard : MSI K8N neo2 platinum
Video Card : XFX 6800GT
RAM: Corsair XMS twinx1024 PC3200XLPRO, latency 2-2-2-5
Harddrives : 2x Western Digital Raptors 74 GM each 10,000 RPM
Crappy DVD writter (I'm not particualr abour speed)
19" CRT Monitor (Its for gaming so LCD is out)

Total price I'm looking at is 2188 US Dollars.

First off, waht are all your thoughts on my parts? Was everything chosen relatively well? Also, I've been wondering what the difference is between Flat Screen monitors and plain old CRT monitors is? LCD monitors are terrible for gaming, and I've never used a flat screen. Are there any benefits to it over a traditional CRT monitor? I'd appreciate if any gamers here let me know about what they think would be better, CRT or flatscreen. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Also, I forgot to mention that I was thinking about a 450 watt Power supply. Is that high enough? Or should I go for a 500 W? Thanks again

As long as you get a good quality psu 450 watts should be plenty. Enermax and Antec are at the forefront of that I believe. If your not going to overclock yourself might want to look into the BFG 6800GT or the Gainward Golden sample. If your like me (in a dorm 4 floors up with no elevator) you'll be regreting even a 17" crt everytime vacations come around. If that's the case might want to consider lcd other I'd go with crt.

If you are going for crt( i would because i think they look much better than lcd) deffinatley get a flat screen. a non-flat screen crt looks horrible, it looks much worse that a lcd. In my mind there is no question get a flat screen crt.

Welcome to the forums!

I'd read this thread about picking memory out, and reconsider the memory to save some cash.

Also, Socket 939 Athlons aren't much faster than their Socket 754 counterparts, and are more expensive to boot. I'd go for the new DFI nForce3 board if you're overclocking.

What case are you using? What about your CPU heatsink? Also a good quality, name brand 350W+ PUS will be just fine for your system.

Regarding the PSU's:
I've read about the requirements for newer CPU's/chipsets being 18A min on the 12V rail.Now is that strictly a requirement for the CPU/MB itself or all together a complete system requirement.Reason I ask is I see lot's of dual 12V rail i.e. #1,#2 listed,but at <18A on either e.g. #1 @ 16A & #2 @ 15A
Doesl such a division of the 12V output still satisfy the requirements or not?
My common sense(gut feeling) tells me that it does.

Another question, assuming the above does satisfy the requirement:
Would one use the larger capacity rail for the CPU or what?

Thanks for all the replies,

I Guess I'll go with a flat screen CRT monitor, since thats what most people are recommending. I was a bit iffy about it because I wasn't sure how well it would suit gaming, I guess its fine.

Also MDE,

I checked out that thread before I posted and saw all the recommendations on the ram, however I feel an inclination to get the well time sticks anyway as I'm just weird like that, heh. Money Isn't that much of an issue as I'm inside my budget with all the parts I'm buying. I probably will be overclocking but not to insane speeds. Just little tweaks here and there, so I don't think the DFI board is necessary, seeing as the one I chose has been well-teseted.

As for a case, I don't know yet. I live in a country called the United Arab Emirates so I'll lbe getting a case/powersupply from here. I can't specify what brands as they don't really sell brand-name cases here. I've been told to excpect a 450W 4 fan case. Thats all I know right now. Haven't even seen it yet.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help, I appreciate it.

CRTs are still best for gaming, although LCDs have gotten much better. I just bought an LCD to replace my CRT (and I do lots of gaming), but that is because space in my college apartment is at a premium and I can barely fit my keyboard on my desk w/ my 19" flat CRT.

My suggestion is, if you are going away to college, get an LCD. Lugging mine around for the past 3 years has been a pain in my a$$.
