My CDROM/DVDROM dissappears after installing some software in Windows XP ! help !

Hi , i recently installed both MusicMatch Jukebox (/w cd writing support) and Apactec DirectCD , after that my system crashes and reboots after inserting an AudioCD , the next boot resulted in no CD/DVD drive found , so i went into device manager to check things up and both my CDRW and DVD drive have exclamation points which means something is wrong with them... it states that i should try updating or reinstalling the drivers for those 2 , so i reinstalled both of them which didn't help , sometimes my system crashes when i try to uninstall them...

i tried uninstalling DirectCD and Musicmatch but it didn't help , so is there a way to fix my current problem ? i tried removing them from the IDE port and using them on my RAID controller which resulted in the same thing..

I had that same problem after I installed nero, if I remember correctly I think I just disabled both drives in the device manager and then re-enabled them both. Then I just did a refresh in device manager. Hope this helps!

oh and it my be a good idea to go ahead and grab the via 4 in 1's for xp if you haven't already. let us know if this doesn't work!

re-enabling both devices didn't work.. i already have the Via 4.37a .....

sigh.... why did i have to install those two...... and my system always crashes everytime i restart / shutdown my computers

ok, turn off the computer, un plug both of them (data and power) and restart. Next power off again and plug in your cd-rw and boot back up and install everything it asks for, then do the same for the dvd-rom. Also if this doesn't work, you might try doing a system roll back to before you had this problem.

This problem happens a lot with third party software in both XP and Windows 2000. Here's how to fix it. You need to open up the Registry by using regedit.exe. Now, here's the fix:

1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Note: You might just have one of the values (either UpperFilters or LowerFilters) in the following key. No matter, just delete which ever value you have.

To be clear, you find that registry key. When you click on it, you'll see a lot of "Values" on the right-hand column. Look amongst those values for one(s) called "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters". That's where software like MusicMatch puts entries. If you see either UpperFilters or LowerFilters, Delete UpperFilters and/or Lowerfilters.

Close regedit. Reboot. Voila! Devices return.

Slikkster is correct - this is the official Microsoft fix for the problem, which is well documented on their knowledgebase.
