My cat jumps at the wall

We have two cats, Reilly and Church. Reilly was found at O'Reilly auto parts just wondering around so we took him in and he's been a great member of the family since. But he does some weird things - cute but weird. Like every night when we go to bed he likes to go to the laundry room or other parts of the house and just jump up at the wall to touch it at the highest point he possibly can. There are no bugs crawling... nothing. Maybe he's seeing things? Skitzo? I dunno. But it drives us nuts. Sometimes he'll just sit there and stare at the wall. Maybe we have something living in the wall... who knows.

Now we have heard crazy things in our new home... a little girl laughing at 3am (inside), random voices, things being moved around, etc. Maybe we have ghosts and he's trying to play with them.

Do any of you cat owners out there have similar experiences? Is this normal behavior?

PIC - Reilly is the larger one here... but Church is actually bigger now.

I'm not sure the cat is the one with the problems here.

Haha... I've come to expect these witty remarks here at ATOT. Gotta love em.

Seriously we've heard random voices from time to time in our house. So I was putting two and two together here.

That's not normal behavior for a cat. I'd take the cat to a priest and have his demons exercised.

Then, once they're in excellent physical fitness, you could have them exorcised.

Our cats do something similar. They stare at this one exterior wall all the time, along the baseboard. My going theory is mice, but I don't really see an entry point from any of the sides and haven't gotten around to checking a little closer. But when I put my ear to the wall I can't hear anything at all.

My other theory is that since the main electrical and phone line run into the basement right underneath this area maybe there's some buzzing noise or something that I just can't detect but they can.

I think my dog is possessed by a cat demon. She likes to sit on the arm of my chair and watch the mouse move around the screen - and then she'll get ready to pounce it. She'll also watch basketball and try to follow the ball around the screen - it's pretty trippy. She'll also randomly stare at things on the wall ... just freaky. One day we were over at my SIL and she was sitting in the kitchen staring at the microwave. She sat there, then would stand on her hind legs for a minute or two and then sit again - she probably did this routine for 15 minutes before we realized the stupid clock was scrolling a message and that's what caught her attention.

One of our two cats likes to jump up on doorjambs as high as he can. Same as yours, not all the time - only when he's in a certain mood. It's amazing how high he can jump.. He only has back claws so you can tell how high he gets, his back claws are able to reach the doorknob.

Reilly does the same thing in the door cracks. I think it's b/c I used to put my finger in between the door crack and the wall and he would chase it. Sometimes he thinks it's going to reappear when I'm around... but I've already exhausted out that exercise.

One of our cats likes to wall-jump.. usually at night (before she goes to sleep). Not sure why... but it's pretty cool looking.

My cat used to do that all the time, then we found that we had bats living in the attic and during winter they would crawl in between the walls and slowly crawl their way through the insulation (my brother heard something one day and peeled back some of the insulation to find a family of bats within).

If the cats ears are focused on that portion of the wall, they may be hearing something that regular humans cannot - they pickup on bats, rats, mice, etc. noises much better than we do and given the way their ears work, they can triangulate on the source of the sound.

This is one possibility. The others usually consist of just having fun or they see something you do not. Cat's eyes are different than ours so they sometimes see things that we do not as a result of certain kinds of light which might explain why it is always that same corner for you.

hehe...in all seriousness, ghosts don't exists. The voices are manifestations coming from your own head, making you think you are hearing things. The brain is a crazy thing. And it can do this with every one of your senses, including smell and sight.

Doesn't mean you're crazy, everyone has their own reasons why this happens, and why it doesn't happen to others. Brain is so complex we'll probably never understand why this happens.

But ghosts don't exist.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's not a word I use very much...and I didn't bother to look it up. 😛
