This thread inspired me: Text

And so, I was wondering because he didn't have a momma cat to teach him to kill mice, I was wondering if my 5 year old cat could still be taught how to catch mice and EAT them and not play with them or not.. He killed the first 2 or 3 (1 rat) but has now limited himself to playing with it and letting it die which has become really frustrating.. Anything I can do? No, I'm not going to kill him...

That is just something indoor cats do.

The mouse does die eventually, so what is the problem?

My cat would always catch rabbits if I left him outside. He'd wait for me to come back outside, take me to the area where he hid the dead rabbits, pull them out, then eat them in front of me. He did it ALL the time.

He left me a few dead birds on my porch too. Gawd I miss him. :(

If you want him to catch mice, then you need to stop feeding him for 3 days. On the 3rd day, just in case he is not successfull, give him some food and let him go for another 2 day before you feed him again.

Alternativly you could cut his food ration in half on the 5th day, because food is life's greatest motivator.

Right... zoos should feed their big cats tofu.

You don't want him eating them. Just pick them up and flush them . And give him atreat afterwards with praise. De-mousing is what you're after, right? Not an auxillary food source.
Wild mice may not be the "cleanest" food source.

Zoos may not feed the big cats tofu, but they do feed them from high quality meat sources.

2. how can I get rid of the mouse with out him crying
3. I'm not really sure how to reward him

Get the cat a toy mouse, some catnip, maybe a laser pointer? I dunno *shrug* I'm a dog person... If you have mice, call a damn exterminator. Mice could be carrying ticks or god-knows-what diseases.

Mice are for teh amateur cats ;)

Ours took down rabbits, dugites (poisonous Aussie snakes) and even native bandicoots when we lived on a bush block ;)

Ahhhh, the life of an 11 year old Calico "Tres". She's the second babe in my life other than my wife. My wife and I have 5 cats........ 11, 3.5, 3, 2 and 1.5 years old.

I'll die when Tres leaves us, but I have pics to remember her by ;(

Oh, her name is Tres (3 in spanish) because when my wife (before I knew her) found her hurt and really limping bad. She took her to the vet and they said there was nothing they could do and one of her legs was really bad and it would be best to put her to sleep. She took her home and babied the hell out of her and here we are..........

8+ years later, this cat outdoes all of our cats in running and playing and you cannot tell she ever had a problem!
Here's a recent pic of Tres licking a lollipop/sucker and one of out newest Calico named Kali licking her nose ;)

Wierd... My cat never licks anything unless he can smell it, also he doesn't like sweets, mostly crap like cucumbers.... Though I'd hardly call him a vegetarian.

Tres looks alot like our Patches. I've had her since she was about four months old. Found her wandering the streets. She'll be 15 next month. The old gal is starting to slow down. . .

Probably just the cat's natural predilection. We have two cats that are the same age and we didn't let them outside until they were about 3 or 4 years old when we had a fence put in the back yard. Pigpen turned out to be a natural hunter and regularly brought back mice, birds, and rabbits to our back door. Missy seemed disinterested in hunting for the most part and couldn't care less chasing around something larger than a bug for fun.

IMO, you shouldn't encourage it, and I don't necessarily mean for humane purposes. Wild mice can be carriers of some parasites and other nastiness, primarily toxoplasmosis. It's not that big of a concern perhaps, but more and more they're finding that humans affected by the parasite have a lot more symptoms than is first evident. If you clean the cat box properly you're likely not at risk, but I'd personally just try to avoid it entirely.

My cat's defective, she only catches and eats bugs. She watches the birds and squirrels, and tried to pounce a deer once, but so far as I know she never catches anything but spiders and flying insects.

She has an almost symmetrical checkerboard pattern on the top of her head. You can kind of see it in this pic.

Um, you think THAT'S defective? My Burman eats ice-cream, yogurt, french-fried, Velveta cheese, and only ONE brand of cat food. But only when it's been warmed and mixed with cat-milk. Oh, and she also chews holes through clothing. She's almost 10, and weighs MAYBE 5 pounds at the outside.
