Dropped off car on Friday to my mechanic, I called him this morning to pick it up and he notified me that someone broke into the lot where the cars are kept and my car was gone. It was a 1994 4door Saturn. The damn thing is only with about $2,500-$3,500 insurance will cover it but damn now I dont have a car.

***UPDATE***

Just got off the phone with my insurance agent, he doesnt think that the garages insurance policy covers theft. I am calling the garage tommorow to get this straightend out. I also just got off the phone with the detective assigned to the case. The Mercedes SUV that was parked next to mine was broken into, the cdplayer stolen, the TV's inside of it stolen and the Wheels taken off. The wheels were left and inside the mercedes was a note taped to the steering wheel that said "Sorry" with a :( under it.

Now this is where it gets interesting, the Mercedes had been there for over a week. The owner brought it in to have repairs on it, which were very expensive. The lady that owned it said um I cant afford that and thats the last the owner of the garage has heard from her. Like I said it has been well over a week since he last had contact with her. The detective thinks that the woman that owns the Mercedes had someone come in and take the radio, tvs etc so she could claim the theft on her insurance, and simply used my car as a getaway car. He also said there is a possibility that the car was stolen to run drugs in it...evidently happens alot. I would have to agree that something is fishy........why else would you steal a car that was worth maybe $3000 when a $30,000 mercedes SUV that was sitting right next to it was broken into.

Weird. I hope no one steals my 1991 Chevy Cavalier, KBB at $275. It's worth as much as any car to me right now because it runs fine. Not worth enough to keep insurance on though.

interesting situation. I thought that if you left your car to get fixed any loss was their responsibility. could be totally wrong tho ;) sorry to hear that in any case, that sucks.

The lot ? I would never leave a car at a place who keeps the cars outdoors overnight. One place actually said they wouldn't have room in the garages to keep it overnight and told me to go elsewhere.

WTF? Why would you sue them? It's not like they intentionally did anything to your car. Ask their insurance to cover it, certainly, but don't friggin SUE the place.

Their insurance wouldn't pay. They always say they aren't responsible for theft, etc. At least that's usually the case.

Is a grocery store responsible if your car is stolen from their lot? Is the city responsible if your car is stolen while parked in the street? Is your friend responsible when the car is parked in their driveway?

seth gave the mechanic responbility of the car while intheir possesion. it's the mecahnic's job to have the lot secured from theft. i could be wrong. but hopefully seth can get this resolved nonetheless.

A grocery store is different from a dealership in that you go to one to buy food, and you give the other the keys to your car.

Valets aren't responsible when you give them your keys.
