My car was broken into! (more inside)

They took my radio but left everything else (nothing really of value besides the radio). No damage to the car though, and at least they didn't steal the whole car! :(

Question is, can I file an insurance claim on this? Will it affect how much I'm paying for insurance? Do I have to file a police report?

Thanks

If you have comprehensive insurance you can file a claim but you will have to pay your deductible and unless your stereo is VERY pricey this is not worth it. They will probably make you file a police report - call them now and find out. But like I said unless it's worth a lot don't bother. I know a guy who's stereo was stolen and some CDs and they claimed that like 50-60 CDs were in the car so they got $1000 to cover them and the stereo. I would not recommend doing this but if it was legit that is a case where you'd want to file the insurance claim.

From now on get a cd player with a detachable face plate :)

You should definately file a police report in case they catch the guy with your radio. Also, depending on your insurance, it might be cheaper to buy a new radio because you might have to pay some type of deductable?

My family's old car was broken into several times.. and each time it was the radio/cassette/cd player that was stolen. If you get a new one, it'll probably be better to get one of those where you can take the faceplate off. I think they tend to not go for those.. :p

Sucks to be me :( I had a stereo with the detachable face plate :( I had it for about two years and for I'd say the first 6 months I would religiously detach the face plate whenever I left the car. But then I got complacent and never did it. I wouldn't say it's my fault for having the radio stolen, but I should have been more careful.

Well I guess this gives me an excuse to upgrade the stereo. Although I don't want to do that until I get a safer parking spot :)

The stereo is my Mazda has some security code. If power is cut to it, you can't use until you enter in the code once the unit is plugged back in. If you fail to enter the correct password, like 3 times in a row the unit has to be taken to a mazda dealer. Not a very convenient stereo to be stealing, that is for sure. Course, there are probably some hacks out there to get past it, but not every thief is that saavy. Most just pawn what they steal

Ditto. I have an Alpine. The car was at the shop to get looked at, overnight, and some punking thief tried to get in. I forgot to take the plate with me. Luckily the car has anti theft protection. They really bitched up my door handle and lock in the process. Now the plate goes with me.

Lucky for me nothing was damaged..the doorlocks still worked and everything. No sign of forced entry. the wierd thing was that the e-brake was up (I don't leave it up). I have no idea why they would do that if they were just stealing the stereo.

Maybe they took it for a round to the nearest bank and returned it. You didn't find any money with colored ink/paint in the backseat did ya? Not to poke fun at your situation, but it's a possibility they did something with it. :)

You are very lucky the door locks are still good. Also don't leave the faceplate in the glove compartment, because they check there :)

Wow :) Almost the exact same thing happened to me. Except it wasn't for that long. I had mine stolen within a year cuz I got lazy and stopped taking the faceplate off.

My insurance didn't cover audio cds when my car got broken into, or computer cds, they said since they should be licensed I should be able to get new copies from the manufacturer, suure that's a simple process.

I've had a vehicle stolen, and a vehicle broken into. The vehicle stolen was eventually recovered, and there is no deductable for Theft here in Calgary, AB. I owned a Jeep CJ back in '89 and after coming back from a pub crawl, I caught two people red handed trying to rip the speakers and stereo out of my jeep while it was parked in a parking lot. Needless to say, I showed very little mercy and compassion. The score: Rudee: 2 Skinny punks: 0.
