MY car is burning engine oil,, can i fix this..

Coming from under the hood can be an easy valve cover fix depending on make and model.
Buring oil to the point it will not pass emmisions?
Clog up the pcv hose going from the valve cover to the cars intake with a wad of newspaper.
Do an oil change but use pure synthetic oil for it will not smoke
Change out any oil fouled spark plugs
And if cap and rotor are bad change them and the wires too.
Run high octane gas
If at all possable take it on the highway and get the engine really warmed up or beat the piss out of it and take right to the emissions place
Should pass provided you do not have an engine code light on.
Aside of that it can be worn engine causing the smoking. Also along with it coming out of the pipe while running take off the oil cap and remove the pcv hose and if you have an abundace of smoke coming from where you put oil in the rings are in really bad shape.
If it is a GM vechile from the 70's to mid 90's and it smokes only at start up and clears away in about a minute or only puffs when you are at a light for a few seconds then smokes when you get the green it is normal GM smoking. It is caused by worn valve gaskets. After awhile it is possable though to keep burning oil out the tail pipe and not have a worn engine but worn valve seals where the engine sucks the oil past them all the time.
But not knowing what kind of car you drive makes it kinda hard. But if it smokes out the pipe and where you put oil in then the engine has had it and will need to be replaced. And this doesnt matter what brand of car you own if it is doing this.

Could also be as simple as a leak from any number of seals (expense varies depending on specific seal and engine). A lot of people think that losing oil is synonymous with burning it as long as they don't see puddles.

For a head gasket?? Are you insane?
For my Porsche it's only expected to be about $3,000 for a new head and labor. And that's assuming bent valves from timing belt failure.
Should be able to get a full long block under 5 thousand for a Tercel....

That was dealership prices. If he can deal with a junkyard motor then under $1K for that and a shop may put it in around another $1k

Whens the last time you had a tune-up & had the timing adjusted, and if that was done recently when was the timing belt/chain last changed?
Valve timing being off can cause an engine to burn more oil then it should, as can fouled spark plugs, so check these things first... if you have less then 150k & have been good with oil changes its not likely to be the rings in a Toyota motor.. the exception to this is if you drove with the engine overheated.
On my Mitsubishi all it was was my valve stem seals, which cost me $8 and a 4-5 hrs to put them in. Of course im sure your tercel is another story probibly sludge buildup and worn metal parts.
If it was the head gasket, you would see a great deal of white smoke when you start the car. This is from a coolant leak, not an oil leak.
If there is some smoke when starting and upon acceleration and not at other times, it's a small leak. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are seeing blue smoke all the time, it needs attention.
In fact, unless you are using more than 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles, I would pay no attention to it at all. More than that and you should have a mechanic take a look.
