edit: to elaborate on 'checking': Visually inspect if you can. Look for dry rot and general cracking/tearing. It's much more likely on smoother-riding cars, which often don't have a full circle of rubber between the metal sleeves (decreasing the density/stiffness of the rubber absorbs shock better- until it rips). If a control arm bushing is enclosed in framerail and you can't see it, you a prybar between the arm and the frame (big one) to try and move the arm. There should be very little deflection when nudged with a ~36" prybar (just give it a firm push, nothing crazy).
