Patriot Media in central NJ was bought by Comcast.

Everyone here complains about Comcast, but I never really pay attention. What's so bad about them?

Dunno, my Comcast internet is up 99.9999% and the speeds average 6 Mbps so I have no idea why the constant whining and complaining about them.

Fixed.

Here in N.VA we have a choice between Cox and Verzion. Needless to say there is more choices, better deals, etc... Problems come up when you are limited to 1 company and they know it. Think phone service before the 90's and cell phones.

Well I got a call yesterday from Comcast telling me that I downloaded just under a terabyte, they said if I did it again they would terminate my account, but I had already terminated my account.

Good point. Where in northern VA are you? I'm moving to Eastern Loudoun Co. soon, and it looks like Comcast took over Adelphia in that area. Verizon has FIOS construction going on in a number of neighborhoods, but it's not available in my area (yet).

You're screwed.

Comcrash is always down, expect down time for the whole weekend (at least three days) for "upgrades" at least once a month. Upload speeds are terrible. They over charge. You never get close to promised speeds. Lets say you pay for 6 dowm, you'll be lucky to get 600k using bittorrent with a lot of seeders. And, the assholes throttle you when they think you are wasting too much bandwidth with illegal activity, when in fact I was just streaming radio and movies off of netflix.

hence my "FRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!!!" threads when I got Fios.

Good luck living with the monopoly.

EDIT: Also expect them to add BS charges to your bill every month for this tax or that service fee etc.

EDIT AGAIN:

Oh yeah I forgot. Forget any type of speeds at prime time internet times (when everyone gets home from work, the weekends, at night, in the mornings, pretty much whenever your neighbors are awake) you will get horrible speeds. Pages will load so slow like it is 56k because farmer mcgee down the street is maxing out the pipe downloading goatsex*

Here in N.VA we have a choice between Cox and Verzion in the small number of areas Verizon has cherry picked to deploy FIOS. Needless to say there is more choices, better deals, etc... Problems come up when you are limited to 1 company and they know it. Think phone service before the 90's and cell phones.

More fixing.

It wasn't that bad a service when I had it, but Verizon's DSL is cheaper, about as fast and reliable, and did I mention cheaper? :)

craptastic sucks, verizon fios please come to my house!

If you live in a large neighborhood, then yes, your comcast will suck. If you live way out there all by your lonesome, then your connection will probably be ok. it all depends on how many households you will be sharing your internet connection with as they always over-subscribe.

Fastest DSL they offer here is 3Mbps and the cost is not that much different than my current 6Mbps from Comcast.

They're probably going to reprogram your digital cable box so it starts with Channel 1 (the Comcast service advertising channel), and then lock out the ability to change it. :|

me and wife just bought a house in Springfield VA (22150). Right near the metro to DC for me.

Choice of Cox or verzion is open for us. Funny how Cox rates dropped and they increased their service as soon as verzion came in.

Comcast offers 6 Mbps and 8 Mbps options for their internet, but apparently the 8 Mbps is being upgraded to 16 Mbps "soon" (according to the CSR I spoke to). This upgrade is apparently pretty common in areas where FIOS is on its way.

For me, the cost difference is $10/month, which is enough to switch. For one week I had both services at the house and ran speed tests on dslreports.com, and got ~3Mbps down each (plus much greater upload on DSL), so there was no loss there. I understand Comcast has made their download even faster now, but 3MB is enough for me, since I'm not doing a whole lot of downloading anyway - no torrents or anything. I was a longtime (5+ years, since the @home days) Comcast subscriber and might have stayed with them, but I got mad when my (purchased) cable modem died and I asked them for a new one (which they were giving away free to every new customer). I figured I was a loyal customer for so long, and had even brought them several referrals, so I deserved what they were giving away to new customers, but they said no, so I said bye!

It's all moot now, because as of yesterday FIOS is available, so the last remnants of Comcast in my home (digital cable) will be out the door! :)

I'd switch to FIOS in a second, but I live in Embarq territory. :(

I'm not terribly pleased with Patriot Media right now. I get the speed they advertise (7 Mb/s), but every once in a while it drops me for a second or so. Not really noticeable while browsing the web, but if I'm on a VPN I lose the connection, and I believe it causes issues when I'm on Xbox Live as well (disconnecting).

Go figure. My mother just sold the house I grew up in in Springfield, same zip code as you and she couldn't even get a 56K dialup connection due to Verizon's ancient equipment that had not been replaced as of last summer.

I don't have digital cable, not worth the extra money for one additional channel that I'd actually watch.

Actually I did upgrade to digital cable for the hockey playoffs... gotta remember to bring that box back.

Comcast is fine.... until you have a issue. It took them 6 months to get my high speed working right, and their permanent "fix" is a amp.

My uncle works for Cox in the Las Vegas area.

How can it be a monopoly if you were able to switch? I guess some people don't really know what that word means. They played the board game a few times and then call themselves experts in monopoly.
