My "budget" gaming build, any improvements to be made?

Hello GH, it's the man everyone loves to hate coming to you guys for advice for the final time.

This is the budget build I'm going with:

Are there any improvements I can make to maybe reduce the overall price without sacrificing any performance?

The Antec 300 was one of the first cheap gaming cases on the market, but it usually doesn't come with all the fans and wire management can be a problem. Unless you really like its classic looks there are plenty of other good cases now in the same price range like the NZXT m59 that don't have the same problems.

As much as I like the idea of an LED monitor they are rather new on the market and I'm not sure I'd buy a cheap one.

Ram is so cheap right now I just couldn't recommend the cheapest available.

If possible I'd slap a cooler on that 955 right away. There are good coolers available for $40.oo these days and no sense in not overclocking that puppy right away.

I think that the Three Hundred is a good case. Wire management isn't going to be a problem with a basic setup like the OP has.

OP, the main suggestion that I have for you is to try to squeeze a bigger monitor into the budget. 21.5" is too small for 1080P IMHO. Here's an ASUS 23.6" for $170 AR

if you're dropping that kind of cash on a build, try to get an i5 750/760.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-375-_-Product

after rebate, the price difference of that card and the gtx 560 ti that you picked is about the same as the price difference between the phenom ii you picked and an i5 760.

and grab something like this

or if you don't mind going open box

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813130240R

or, this is a good combo deal

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.603970

also u might be able to save some $ if u can get a combo deal on a psu/case

I think a 560ti plus an AMD Phenom II X4 955 would be better for gaming than a 5850 plus Intel 760..sure my cpu may be a little slower for certain things but I don't do any CPU intensive tasks besides extracting files lol

Youse guys are wasting your time. Endless Mike knows all...🙄

GPU is more important than CPU, a decent dual core CPU is good enough for vast majority of games; sandy bridge quad cores arent needed

it really depends on the games you're playing. my friend was asking me about helping him build a new desktop to play wow, so i looked up the latest wow expansion, cataclysm, and apparently there's something of a cap on how fast the game runs on amd processors, no matter which one you look at.

of course, this could be an isolated situation that could be fixed with an update, i really don't know as i haven't looked much into the specifics of how games run on intel's latest vs amd's latest. however, i currently have a phenom ii x4 at 3.2ghz and it's plenty fast for me, and i haven't used intel in a desktop the p4 days...

if i were to go for a new build, i'd wait for sandy bridge to be re-released and/or bulldozer, possibly ivy bridge...but if i had to buy *now* i personally wouldn't sink money into a phenom ii chip unless i got a really (really) good deal on it; core i5 750/760 seems the best choice to me, unless i wanted to go cheap, in which case i'd try to nab a quad core amd chip for ~$100. but i wouldn't pay full price for a phenom ii x4.

as far as 560 ti vs 5850, i can't really say for sure, all i know is that THG's graphics hierarchy chart has both cards listed on the same level, which means they should be quite close to each other on average. i've been using ati cards for awhile and i, personally, haven't had any problems with them...however i wouldn't explicitly not buy nvidia. buuut, considering that the 560 ti seems to be going for $250 and the 5850 can be had for ~$180 after rebate ($200 before), i wouldn't spend the extra money on the 560.

but that's me. it's your money, buy what you want. what i don't understand is, if you're so set on these things already, then why did you even bother posting this thread?

EDIT: the reason boomerd is 'harassing' you is because your opinions on amd vs intel cpus are going against the consensus that the majority holds, and that, even though you know this, continue to profess it, and are unflinching in your belief, you posted this thread asking for opinions on a build with an amd chip, knowing that people would ultimately suggest an intel chip instead, with no other recourse than debate on the issue!

it's not because he disagrees with you, it's because you're bating a (very tired) argument. granted he's being a *tad* harsh about it, you know exactly what you're doing.

but ultimately, i think you both need to back down and stop acting like children.

I respect your advice, but I can say for sure about the 560ti vs 5850.

I've done tons of research on both cards and the 560 just blows the 5850 out of the water; it's not gonna be on par with the 560.

And I do want to go cheap, I'm on a very tight budget here..

fair enough, i haven't seen very many in-depth benchmarks comparing the two; from what i've seen they seem pretty similar, in the grand scheme of things. but to be frank i haven't read up much on the 560.

in the interest of you getting the best performance for your dollar, i feel obligated to suggest that you consider throwing together a gtx 460 sli setup.

if you're on such a budget, why not look for a used phenom ii?

The 5850/460 does seem good advice to save a few bucks but a 560 just makes my penis feel bigger only for a few extra bucks so why not lol?

Also, one thing I didn't mention in the OP was that I am gonna be gaming at 1680 x 1050 in a last ditch effort to save even more cash..

oh dude if you're gaming at 1680x1050 i'd really suggest going the 5850/460 route. honestly man, even if it's "not enough" you can always return it or sell it. i mean, use the same logic here that you use regarding intel vs amd.

that is, it depends on how much you really want to save the money.

lol 1680x1050 isnt even worth the 560Ti at that point... you are just spending money in the wrong place, tell us your FINAL budget because you keep changing shit based on your budget which we dont know so we cant suggest anything...
