My brothers girlfriend just bought a 98 Camaro..

only 200hp on a 3.8L engine? that seems a bit low since my parents taurus has a 3.0L and it has a lil over 200 i think. i could be wrong though.

yeah.. the Taurus has an old 3.0 with 151hp (has push rods I believe), and then the newer ones has OHC and produce 200hp.

According to Edmunds, it's worth about 7500$ retail. That's why I said a little on the high side. Still not too bad, considering she's female and has no negotiating skills. 😛

Congrats to her on the Crapmaro...err...camaro..purchase...she now has the biggest dash in existance. 😀

My buddy had a f-body...you could pitch a tent on the dash...heh.

😉

whao.... what a spontaneous person.. that's cool.
That's the exact opposite impression I had of the spontaneity of a poorly thought out car purchse, but for $8k it doesn't sound too bad.

That's true about the biggest dash in the world - it totally feels like you're driving the dashboard. Also, I could do without the decent sized blindspot - where most coupes have a small window, the Camaro has a big plastic panel with a speaker in it ;-)

As for the distributor in the 3.8 98-02 Camaros, I honestly have no idea where it is, but I see your point - there's lots of space up underneath that monstrous dash to hide something like that. I never had to mess with it, maybe that's why my outlook was a little more positive. Plugs weren't difficult, and an oil change could be done in one's sleep. It was light years ahead of working on the 3.1 in my 98 Grand Am or the 3.3 in my 92 Grand Am, which are my main points of reference as they're the only other GM cars I've had.

That's probby why the Camaro is one of the only sports cars with 5-star front and rear impact ratings, 5 star passenger and 4 star driver side..

Yeah, WTF is up with that?

The first thing I said when I got in the car was..I can't see! I mean, sure.. you don't need to see when you're a passenger, but.. it's still nice. 😕

Other than that, it does seem considerably better than their old 88 Prelude. Hopefully it turns out to be reliable for them.

She put over 4000$(well, some of that was rims and a stereo) into the Prelude, and it was still a POS where you never knew what was going to go wrong next, because of the moron previous owner "mechanics". lol....

Update:

Wow, I just found out that her interest rate is 24%. :Q

Should she try and see if she can get refinanced? Just about anything would be better than 24%. :Q

Holy crap! She would have been better off to put the whole thing on a credit card!

That's not that bad really. We bought new a few months back and our rate was 3.74% so I'd expected used to be a bit higher.

24%? Holy Christ... How bad is her credit? I have a credit card that I could have put the entire car on, would have been 7.9 fixed... And even that would be bad. And in spite of what some morons may think, spontaneous $8000 @ 24% is a BAD thing. Spontaneous is cool for <$20 (or better yet free), but she spontaneously hosed herself for the next few years.

Don't listen to the F-body nay sayers, the V6 Camaro is far faster than the V6 'Stang of equivalent vintage, & the V8 blows the GT away by far. Oh, did I mention they handle a whole lot better than people give them credit for?

Z28 = 95% of a Corvette at a fraction the cost.

When I get around to buying a new(er) car it will be a LS1 Z28 or SS.

Just a reminder to all the people completely lacking in reading comprehension skills. The buyer is concerned about reliability, not what cars she can pull on down at the strip.

Actually, she's a pretty aggressive driver...especially for a female.. so she doesen't mind the gofast aspect. 😉

Wouldn't that rate be borderline illegal? I've never heard of such a high rate on a car loan before.

Unfortunately I've seen higher, a 19 y/o with 29% on an $11K Eclipse.

Absolutely insanity.

Heh, that's not so bad...I mean my parents financed a new $30,000 Subaru Outback wagon for 24 MONTHS at 0%, so it's really just an inversion of some numbers. Don't sweat it.

Borderline yes, but the legal limit is somewhere in the 20's afaik.

Anyway: HAHAHAHHAHAHA. I just will never stop laughing at people so stupid that they don't understand what an interest rate is. Over 48 months she's paying around $260 on an $8k car, whereas with a 7% interest rate - which she should have - it would be 190ish.

I know, it's sad...

All my brother and I can do is shake our heads, and hope she learns sometime.. rofl...

They lowered her monthly payments to 230$, and yeah.. 48mo.

Also, apparently the original price was 9500, she "talked them down" to 8500 and they gave her 1500 for the Prelude making her loan 7000$.

So $7000, 230$/mo for 48 mos.. I think I figured it was almost $11,000 all together.. :Q

The saddest part is she left thinking she "got them" and got a good deal. She didn't even know her interest rate until I asked and she looked through her papers.. lol

She didn't know her interest rate?

Let me guess, she negotiated off of payments?

The first words out of your mouth when you sit down to deal should be:

If you say the word payment or monthly I walk, understood?

Ahaha, people like her are a car salesmen's wet dream. Probably the most tragic part of this all is that she actually thinks she won over on them. And not knowing her interest rate is unconscionable. If they gave her $1500 for her prelude I would bet it was worth significantly more.

If I were a car salesmen I'd personally get randy over the two following kinds of people:

1) Single girl who comes in and falls in love with a cute car.
2) Young guy who just _has_ to have that mustang, and couldn't care less what he pays for it.

Hey Eli, I have a magnetic fuel stabilizer along with a Tornado that I can sell her, both these together will jump the horsepower rating to 280 and her fuel mileage will increase to 30 city/45 highway, my APR will only be 20%.
