my brother's christmas present

eits

Lifer
i want to build him something for school. he's a sophomore in college right now and i want to build him a good laptop, but not top of the line. he's not into gaming, but he's very into music. he's gonna need a rather huge hard drive.

also, a cool-looking case would be nice... i kinda liked the aopen 1558-jl case, but i'm not too knowledgable about laptop chassis (anyone else know that the plural of "chassis" is "chassis"?).

i was thinking maybe a pentium m 730...

please help me with a recommended build.... i don't wanna break the bank, but i want something that will last him through the next 3 or 4 years.

can i get some more recommended setups? i'm interested in getting him a widescreen notebook... that's a must.

hmm.. you might want to ask your Bro what he really needs/wants. If he just wants to carry his mega-mp3 collection around the campus, you should just get him a hard-drive based MP3 player. Much more cost efficient and practical. Only get him a laptop if he has absolute need/want for it. My parents got me a ~$900 laptop on my 1st year, but after 1 year, I realized I only used it for surfing in lecture (bad), and playing games on it. I just sold that laptop on Ebay, and planning to save the money for something more worthwile.

If you really want to get a laptop for your bro. Post your budget.

i'm giving him my brand new ipod mini as part of the present

the laptop is gonna be his travel computer.... he comes home on the weekends. it'd be nice to have his music and movies at home with him rather than on his tower at school.

budget for the parts = ~$900ish.... no more than $1000. that should be plenty to build him a sweet laptop. not only that, but i don't even need to buy a processor, since i've already got a pentium m 760.

I would think that a thin and light laptop would be a better solution..... He could carry it wherever he wants. I would suggest a widescreen 14.1. You could always change the processor, upgrade the HD, and beef up the ram.

yeah, thanks... that's kinda why i'm asking for people to help post some specs.... like, chassis, for starters

anyone know of some good widescreen chassis i can buy?

also, what kind of hard drive, ram, etc.

Well, you might be able to get pretty close to $1000 with the Asus Z63a if you can bring your own OS. That's a very well built laptop with a good screen, I gather. A bigger hard drive and more RAM would start costing more.

Another option might be to try for a HP DV1000 series laptop. It's not a barebones notebook, but it's a fairly light 14" widescreen with a number of multimedia functions that would probably be great for movies and music.

EDIT: So I checked it out, and I think a DV1000 would be a great way to go. You can save a bunch by sticking with a Celeron processor and putting in your Pentium M, and get plenty of hard drive space for less than $1000.

yeah, i've got my own windows and i've got a 2915agb pci wifi that i was trying to sell... i guess i'll throw it in here.

i kinda wanna build the laptop, though. it's a first-time project and it'd be more personal.... kinda like "don't buy your mom a mother's day card; make her one" kinda thing.

You might wind up having to spend more to build it yourself. Of course, my knowledge about barebone laptops is kind of limited, so maybe someone else can think of a good one that fits your budget.

If all your brother needs is to carry his music collection with him and browse here and ther, then by all means get him a Thinkpad X22 for $ 340
that should be a gift he will never forget, instead of spending near a thousand on a brand new custom built laptop that he might not take complete advantage of 😉
