My parents called me at 7:30am to tell me there was a fire at my the apartment complex where my brother just moved into. They were on the way to check things out because they were pretty sure it was the building my brother was in. My brother is out of town visiting a friend this weekend so at least there wasn't the frantic period trying to find out if he was alive.
It's a good thing my parents called me and told me because the news stations in upstate SC apparently don't work on weekends and unless you're Mark Sanford, Michael Jackson or a serial killer in Gaffney you aren't going to make the news. Only 1 of the 4 major news outlets that cover upstate SC had anything on TV or their website about the fire. As of 11am this morning two of them still have absolutely nothing on their website and 1 added an article that is all of 3 sentences. Excellent news coverage.
According to the fire department the cause of the fire appears to be a resident falling asleep with a lit cigarette (wonderful). No one was seriously injured in the fire (4 taken to hospital with broken bones from jumping from second story windows), but numerous pets were lost and about 40 units at the complex are a complete loss (including my brothers). All residents are required to have renters insurance by the property management company so at least he's covered, but it irritates the hell out of me that the carelessness of one can change the lives of dozens.
My brother was visiting a friend in WV this weekend so I can only imagine how it felt to get a call at 8:00 this morning from my parents telling him everything he owned is now gone.
Cliffs:
- brother's apartment burned down last night (no serious injuries)
- barely any news coverage because of the local fixation on Michael Jackson and our absolutely worthless governor
