My brother lost his XP Home disc that came with his Compaq

What are his options? He has the product key on a sticker on the case. I tried using a XP Home iso I downloaded but when I went to activate it after the install, it said the product key was invalid.

Call Compaq and request a replacement disc.
There may be a small shipping fee.
Or, it's also possible that: no Windows install disc was included with the machine when purchased.
Instead, the data is kept on a hard disc partition. So, you have to call Compaq and request
a Windows install disc (as opposed to only a "system restore disc").

Is the recovery partition still intact?

If so, F11 during bootup should access that & allow you to reinstall back to the original factory presets.

Otherwise you'll need either to order the discs as mentioned, or you'll need an OEM XP Home disc (which will activate just fine).

Many Compaq's have the contents of the XP CD on the harddrive. Look for a folder called i386. If it is there, you can create your own XP disc.
